Cabrera goes the distance in O's win - 7/2/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, behind a sensational complete-game gem from Daniel Cabrera, enjoyed a satisfying 5-2 win over the Royals. Coming off a rough, winless June, the enigmatic right-hander overcame a leadoff homerun and went the distance for the second time this year, garnering his sixth victory and giving a much-needed rest to a weary O’s bullpen. Cabrera’s teammates gave him early run support thanks to an Aubrey Huff homerun and a three-hit night by surprise cleanup hitter Ramon Hernandez.

Redemption! O's, Sherrill bounce back - 7/1/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles bounced back to their feet in a badly needed victory, hanging on to beat the Royals, 7-5. For the second night in a row, the O’s built a big early lead and spent the rest of the night trying not to let it slip away. This time, they were successful, thanks to an impressive outing by starter Radhames Liz and two scoreless innings of relief from newly activated Adam Loewen. But true redemption wasn’t complete until the ninth inning, when George Sherrill-- faced yet again with two outs, two strikes, and the tying run at the plate-- struck out Alex Gordon to overcome his recent demons and seal the win.

O's demoralized again in awful loss - 6/30/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In an absolutely crushing defeat, the Orioles dropped the opener of a four-game series to the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in 11 innings. For the second straight game, closer George Sherrill (pic) blew a lead with two outs and two strikes in the final inning, coughing up an 0-2 homerun to Miguel Olivo that tied the game in the ninth. Jose Guillen’s RBI single off Chad Bradford in the 11th competed the Royals’ comeback from an early 5-1 deficit and sent a demoralized O’s team reeling. Remember how I said Sunday was the most painful loss of the year? Scratch that-- there’s a new holder of that title.

Belliard's walkoff HR stuns Orioles - 6/29/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their most painful defeat of the season, the Orioles dropped their 12th straight Sunday game with-- fittingly-- a 12th-inning loss to the Nationals, 3-2. Ronnie Belliard’s two-out, two-strike, two-run homer off closer George Sherrill (pic) delivered a punch in the gut to O’s fans everywhere. In a low-scoring contest that went to extra innings tied at one, the Birds broke on top in the 12th on an Adam Jones RBI single, and Sherrill got two quick outs in the bottom half. The Orioles were one measly strike away from sealing a winning road trip, securing a season series win over the Nats, and-- oh yeah-- snapping that 11-game Sunday losing streak. But Sherrill walked Dmitri Young and then hung a 1-2 slider that Belliard drove into the left-field seats for an instant O’s loss.

O's bounce back, bash Nats, 9-1 - 6/28/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles got back on the winning track in decisive fashion, pounding the Nationals by a 9-1 score. After a lackluster showing in the opening game of the series, the O’s atoned for their missteps and were firing on all cylinders tonight. The offense erupted for nine runs in a four-inning span, with Adam Jones (pic) leading the charge by collecting four hits and scoring three times. Seven different O’s hitters collected an RBI, including pitcher Garrett Olson, who slogged through a laborious but victorious five-inning stint. Lance Cormier worked the final four innings out of the bullpen for his first major-league save.

O's take dreary loss to Nationals, 4-2 - 6/27/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their final interleague series of the year with a disappointing loss to the Washington Nationals, 4-2. Riding high off a great series win at Wrigley Field, the O’s suffered a letdown in their first visit to Nationals Park, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position as part of a paltry offensive effort. Meanwhile, starter Daniel Cabrera bookended an otherwise solid outing with a pair of rough innings, giving up two runs in the first and two in the seventh to provide the Nationals’ margin of victory.

Fahey Recalled, Salazar Demoted, Albers to DL - 6/27/2008 11:00:00 PM - Hoffman

O's offense explodes in big Wrigley win - 6/26/2008 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed a surprising series win over the Cubs by delivering an 11-4 rubber-game beatdown. The O’s offense absolutely teed off on Cubs starter Jason Marquis and a slew of relievers, with Aubrey Huff (pic) leading the charge with his fourth four-hit game of the season (including three doubles). Guillermo Quiroz added three knocks for an efficient O’s lineup, as six different Orioles collected hits, six had RBIs, and six scored at least one run. The Birds’ fourth double-digit run total of the season backed a shaky but gutsy Radhames Liz, who battled through five scoreless innings for his second win.

O's Place Albers on DL; Promote F. Cabrera - 6/26/2008 12:00:00 PM - Hoffman
The Orioles today placed pitcher Matt Albers (pictured) on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder soreness. In order to fill his place in the O's bullpen, the O's will promote pitcher Fernando Cabrera from AAA Norfolk.

Cubs beat injury-ravaged Orioles, 7-4 - 6/25/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, hit hard by injuries and harder by the Cubs, lost the second game of the series, 7-4. On a night when pitchers dropped like flies-- with Brian Burres and Matt Albers both felled by ailments before the first inning was over-- the O’s slipped into a quick four-run deficit and never recovered. Like the Birds on Tuesday, the Cubs plated seven early runs and held the fort from there, despite a remarkable two-homerun game from unexpected catalyst Jay Payton (pic). The teams will wrap up the series in a Thursday afternoon rubber game.

O's escape with win in Wrigley debut - 6/24/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a stupendous game with an absolutely thrilling finish, the Orioles celebrated their first trip to Wrigley Field with a 7-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. The O’s jumped out to a seemingly comfortable six-run lead with an offensive explosion-- paced by three Brian Roberts (pic) hits, including the 1,000th of his career-- but then had to fight for everything they were worth to hang on. The Cubs battled back with a furious late-inning rally, shaving the deficit to just two runs and threatening to deliver the finishing blow in the ninth. But with the bases loaded and nobody out, closer George Sherrill pulled off the most amazing escape in a season full of them, striking out three batters in a row to preserve the win and silence a stunned Wrigley Field crowd. The Orioles’ heart-pumping win snapped the 14-game home winning streak of the best team in the major leagues. Wow!

Sunday, bloody Sunday: O's lose again - 6/22/2008 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dropped the rubber game of the weekend series with the Brewers, 7-3, to run their Sunday losing streak to 11. In an unsightly afternoon of play, the O’s offense was appallingly unable to come through in the clutch. Despite racking up 17 baserunners, the Birds were somehow able to plate only three of them, thanks to a mind-boggling 1-for-12 performance with runners in scoring position and an eye-popping five double plays. The squandered chances allowed the Brewers to hang around and muscle their way to victory with four homeruns, including two by Prince Fielder. In a game ripe for the taking, Dave Trembley’s crew instead saw its Sunday woes continue unchecked.

O's come up short, fall to Brewers, 3-2 - 6/21/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles had their winning streak snapped at four with a low-octane loss to the Brewers, 3-2. Fresh off a series-opening slugfest that featured 11 runs in the first three innings, tonight’s encore turned into a pitcher’s duel by contrast. Daniel Cabrera (pic) returned to form with a solid six innings-- including a season-high eight strikeouts-- but he was outpitched by Brewers righty Seth McClung, who held the Birds to just three hits. Oscar Salazar’s pinch-hit two-run homer provided the only runs for the Orioles, who squandered a slew of opportunities by going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Bullpen, bats lead Birds over Brewers - 6/20/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a nine-game interleague road trip with a wild win over the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-5. Playing against their come-from-behind style, the O’s opened a huge early lead with six runs in the first two innings, only for shaky starter Radhames Liz to nearly give it all back. Enter an incredible Birds bullpen. Five relievers combined for an amazing seven shutout innings, including two scoreless frames by winner Lance Cormier, a bases-loaded escape from Jamie Walker, and an unbelievable Houdini act in the ninth for closer George Sherrill. Aubrey Huff (pic) was the hitting hero for the Birds with a pair of homeruns as part of a four-hit night, and Brian Roberts added three knocks from the leadoff spot.

O's sweep away Astros with 7-5 win - 6/19/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled off their first three-game sweep of the year, hanging on for a 7-5 win over the Astros in the finale. For a change of pace, the O’s did the majority of their damage in the early innings, exploding for six runs by the fifth to come back from a 2-0 deficit. Alex Cintron’s three hits-- including a homerun-- paced the offensive attack, though his two misplays in the ninth made the finish much tenser than it should’ve been. Happily, George Sherrill slammed the door by retiring Lance Berkman-- the potential go-ahead run-- for the final out. Brian Burres (pic) recovered from his recent stretch of lousy outings with a solid 5 2/3 innings, picking up his team-leading sixth win.

Millar's single wins it in 10th for Birds - 6/18/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles celebrated yet another thrilling, last at-bat victory, beating the Astros, 2-1, in 10 innings. At this point, the Birds’ heroics have practically become standard operating procedure, and tonight’s win hit all the bullet points. Erasing a late-inning deficit? Check-- Luke Scott’s solo homer in the seventh knotted the game after the Astros had snapped a scoreless tie in the top half. A walkoff hit? Check-- Kevin Millar’s RBI single in the 10th delivered the game-winning run. A superb but criminally unrewarded outing by Jeremy Guthrie? Check-- the righty worked eight fantastic innings and allowed only three hits. A shutdown bullpen? Check-- Chad Bradford worked two scoreless frames for the victory. Another delightful appearance of Orioles Magic? Check-- and I’ll never get tired of that.

O's come back again, beat Astros, 6-5 - 6/17/2008 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The amazin’ Orioles pulled off another last-at-bat comeback win, beating the Houston Astros, 6-5. Melvin Mora’s (pic) two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning delivered the decisive blow, helping the Birds rally back from a two-run deficit. Aubrey Huff and Nick Markakis contributed to the cause with homers, while the bullpen worked 4 1/3 strong innings, including a redemptive 1-2-3 ninth inning from closer George Sherrill. On Wild Bill Hagy T-shirt night, the Birds did him proud with some old-fashioned Orioles Magic.

Ninth-inning heroics fall short, O's lose - 6/15/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In another unbelievable day of baseball, the Orioles dropped the finale of the three-game set with the Pirates, 5-4, in 10 innings. For the third straight game, the O’s pulled off an amazing late-inning comeback-- with Brian Roberts’s (pic) two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth knotting the game at four-- but this time, the Pirates overcame the punch to the gut and jumped back in front in extra innings. Adam LaRoche’s RBI single off George Sherrill delivered the winning run in the 10th, and the O’s fell one comeback short in the bottom half. With the close-but-no-cigar defeat, the Birds were denied a three-game sweep and fell to 1-10 on Sundays.

O's win thriller with 9th-inning heroics - 6/14/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their most chaotic, back-and-forth, roller-coaster ride of the season, the Orioles pulled off another amazing win over the Pirates, 8-7. Ramon Hernandez’s (pic) game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth capped a wild night of baseball that included six homeruns, four late-inning lead changes, blown saves by both closers, and a quartet of comebacks by the Birds. Aside from Hernandez, there was no shortage of heroes on the Orioles’ end, with Brian Roberts and Adam Jones each collecting three hits, Oscar Salazar smashing a game-tying homerun in the ninth, and Radhames Liz pitching a gem in his third start. The thrilling victory puts the O’s in position for a three-game sweep on Sunday.

O's top Pirates with big comeback win - 6/13/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles welcomed the Pittsburgh Pirates back to Baltimore by enjoying another stupendous come-from-behind win, 9-6. In the Pirates’ first visit to the city in 29 years, the O’s rallied back furiously from an early five-run deficit, clawing back into the game thanks to nine walks and a slew of timely hits. Melvin Mora’s (pic) three-hit night-- including the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth-- led the Birds’ thrilling comeback and handed a win to Brian Burres, who got hit hard again but gutted out six innings. Jim Johnson and George Sherrill worked three perfect innings to close out the Orioles’ big win.

Sox rock Guthrie, Orioles lose, 9-2 - 6/12/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles concluded an otherwise successful road trip with a forgettable blowout loss to the Red Sox, 9-2. In the rubber game of the series, the O’s once again gave Jeremy Guthrie zero run support-- but this time it didn’t matter, because the right-hander got shelled for his worst outing of the season. Three Red Sox homeruns-- including a back-breaking grand slam by Mike Lowell in the fifth-- led Boston’s romp over a mistake-prone Orioles club. Still, the Birds head back to Camden Yards with a winning road trip under their belt, having gone 5-4 on their three-city tour.

Five-run first dooms Olson, Orioles - 6/11/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ high-flying road trip was grounded for a night as they lost to the Red Sox by a 6-3 score. Coming off an exciting win in the series opener, the O’s were immediately brought back to earth when the Sox pounded Garrett Olson for five runs in the first inning and cruised from there. The Birds’ bats were held silent for the majority of the game, and a ninth-inning mini-rally fell short, slipping the O’s back to the .500 mark.

O's win back-and-forth battle at Fenway - 6/10/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In the last and most difficult stop of their three-city road trip, the Orioles stormed into Boston and stunned the Red Sox with an exhilarating 10-6 win. Aubrey Huff’s (pic) four-hit night-- including a game-tying two-run single in the seventh-- sparked an impressive comeback and paced a blistering double-digit offensive attack. In a back-and-forth contest that seemed to shift momentum every half inning, the Birds jumped on Sox ace Josh Beckett for a four-run second inning, only to fall behind when Daniel Cabrera was wild and ineffective. But the bullpen did a superb job-- with five relievers hurling four shutout, one-hit innings-- and allowed an aggressive O’s offense to work its last-minute heroics.

Sunday struggles continue; O's lose, 5-4 - 6/8/2008 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles let a possible three-game sweep slip through their fingers, losing the series finale to the Blue Jays, 5-4. Facing long odds of beating Jays ace Roy Halladay, the O’s surprisingly put the former Cy Young winner on the ropes, with Luke Scott bashing a pair of homers to stake the Birds to a two-run lead. Radhames Liz gutted through five innings despite control problems and left in line for a win, but the normally reliable Matt Albers (pic) coughed up the lead in the sixth, serving up three runs as the O’s fell to 1-9 on Sundays.

O's bust out bats for Guthrie, beat Jays - 6/7/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles picked up their fifth win in six games, and guaranteed themselves a series win over the Blue Jays, with a 9-5 victory. In a nearly unprecedented event, the O’s actually gave some offensive support to Jeremy Guthrie-- quite a bit of it, in fact. Jay Payton (pic) was the surprising hitting star, ripping three hits and a season-high five RBIs, while Nick Markakis added another three hits to his torrid June total. For once, Guthrie was well-rewarded for a superb performance, allowing just one run in seven strong innings, and Dennis Sarfate bailed the Birds out of an overly adventurous four-run Jays ninth.

8th-inning HRs lead O's comeback win - 6/6/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a three-game series in Toronto with an incredible comeback win, stunning the Blue Jays with a 6-5 victory. Down 4-0 in the eighth inning and seemingly in a rut offensively, the Birds bludgeoned the Blue Jays’ bullpen with an amazing six-run rally, blasting three homeruns-- by Melvin Mora, Kevin Millar, and Adam Jones-- to cap a shocking and stupendous turn of events. A four-hit night by Nick Markakis (pic) contributed to the O’s attack, while four relievers combined for an effective 4 2/3 innings after another rocky outing from starter Brian Burres. The sensational win, the Orioles’ fourth in their last five games, brought the club back to the .500 mark.

Well-timed HRs lead O's over Twins - 6/5/2008 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled off an impressive series win in Minnesota with a tight victory in the rubber game, 3-2. The typically modest O’s offense delivered all its runs on two swings of the bat: a Nick Markakis two-run homer in the third and an Adam Jones (pic) tiebreaking solo shot in the seventh. They proved to be just enough support for solid starter Garrett Olson and three Birds relievers, who finagled their way out of several dicey predicaments to seal the Orioles’ first series win over the Twins since May 2005.

Orioles dumped by pesky Twins, 7-5 - 6/4/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles let one slip away against the Twins, coughing up an early three-run lead en route to a disappointing 7-5 loss. A game that seemed to be going the Birds’ way early-- with five runs and nine hits in the first four innings, and Daniel Cabrera on the mound-- turned sour in short order. An erratic Cabrera was knocked around for six runs in his roughest outing of the season, while the Birds’ bats went completely silent once the Twins’ bullpen got into the game. Mistakes in the field and on the basepaths didn’t help matters either, continuing the Orioles’ recent Metrodome malaise.

Rad! Liz earns first win, O's nip Twins - 6/3/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their nine-game, three-city road trip in encouraging fashion, exorcising their Minnesota demons with a 5-3 win over the Twins. Radhames Liz’s 2008 debut was a resounding success, with the young right-hander tossing five superb innings en route to his first major-league win. On the offensive end, Kevin Millar and Melvin Mora cranked homeruns and the heating-up Adam Jones drove in a pair of runs as part of a 13-hit attack, leading the Birds to their first victory over the Twins since 2006.

O's avoid sweep with dramatic win, 6-3 - 6/2/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles salvaged the series finale against the Red Sox with a thrilling late-inning victory, 6-3. Adam Jones’s (pic) tie-breaking, bases-loaded double completed a four-run eighth inning that turned the tables on the Sox and denied them a four-game sweep. Starter Jeremy Guthrie delivered another fine performance but was once again criminally unsupported by his offense, and a go-ahead Boston run off the bullpen in the eighth threatened to send the Birds on the road on a sour note. But at the last moment, they re-discovered their Orioles Magic, just in time for a nine-game, three-city road trip.

Burres bombed, Birds beaten, 9-4 - 6/1/2008 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened June with a forgettable blowout loss to the Red Sox, 9-4. Unlike the previous two games of the series, today’s contest was decided early. Brian Burres suffered his second straight horrendous start, getting pulverized for seven runs and 12 hits in a four-inning dud, dooming the Birds to their eighth consecutive Sunday loss. Though there were a couple of bright notes-- such as Luke Scott’s 2-for-4 day with a homer and Steve Trachsel’s successful long relief effort-- the O’s dropped to a season-worst three games under .500 and have been pushed to the brink of a four-game series sweep.

Orioles lose late to Sox again, 6-3 - 5/31/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles finished a mediocre month of May with their third straight loss, 6-3, to the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez’s 500th career homerun, a solo blast off Chad Bradford, was part of a go-ahead Red Sox rally in the seventh and one of four runs scored off the Birds’ bullpen. The O’s offense, meanwhile, remained frustratingly unable to deliver in the clutch, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position after two RBI singles in the second. The defeat caps an 11-16 month that featured two five-game losing streaks.

O's throw one away in awful loss to Sox - 5/30/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their single worst game of the season, the Orioles suffered an extra-inning meltdown in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Despite a valiant pitching effort from Daniel Cabrera and six relievers, the O’s sabotaged themselves with appalling defensive mistakes in the 13th, committing three errors-- including costly miscues by Melvin Mora (pic) and Freddie Bynum-- that led to a three-run Sox rally. The offense was just as horrid, stranding 14 runners on base, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and squandering three potential winning rallies. Tonight was anything but Orioles Magic, folks.

Mistakes add up in 4-2 Orioles loss - 5/28/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles fumbled away their chance at a sweep of the Yankees, losing the finale by a 4-2 score. Fresh off their most exciting victory in ages, the Birds’ encore effort was marred by defensive misplays, a lethargic offense, and a critical baserunning blunder, turning a winnable game into a sour defeat. Oriole killer Andy Pettitte notched his 24th career victory against the club with a solid 6 2/3 innings, once again saddling hard-luck ace Jeremy Guthrie with an undeserved loss. Still, the Birds came away with a series win, and will hope to repeat their success in a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Incredible! O's stun Yanks in extras - 5/27/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
Two words: Instant. Classic. In what manager Dave Trembley called “the best game I’ve ever been a part of to win,” the Orioles pulled out an unbelievable 10-9, 11-inning victory over the Yankees. Alex Cintron’s walkoff, bases-loaded single in extras-- after the Yanks had taken the lead in the top of the 11th-- capped the Birds’ third incredible comeback of the night. The O’s twice rallied back from four-run deficits with a shocking parade of homerun power, smashing five dingers-- including two pairs of back-to-back blasts, and two by Kevin Millar (pic)-- and combining with the Yankees for nine roundtrippers by the fifth inning. Five O’s relievers worked 7 1/3 sensational innings to keep the game within reach, and the Birds flashed the leather with a game-changing double play in the top of the 11th. Though an hour-long rain delay sent many fans to the exits before the game’s near-midnight conclusion, those who stayed witnessed one of the most amazing games in recent memory.

The return to Camden Yards was just what the doctor ordered for two Birds in particular: Nick Markakis (pic), who began to shake off a month-long slump with three hits, a homer, and two RBIs; and Garrett Olson, who rebounded from a brutal start with seven scoreless innings of sweet redemption against the Yanks. The win pulled the O’s back to the .500 mark and jumped them back in front of the Yankees for fourth place in the AL East.

The Birds were guilty of several costly blunders that doomed them to their seventh straight Sunday loss, with baserunning mistakes, defensive miscues, and an overall lack of focus littering the series finale. Evan Longoria’s RBI double off George Sherrill in the bottom of the ninth snapped a four-all tie and wrapped up the Birds’ already sour 1-5 road trip on a bitter note. The O’s fell to last place in the AL East.

Trachsel shredded in 11-4 O's loss - 5/24/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles dipped back to the .500 mark with their fourth straight loss, an 11-4 blowout against the Rays. An overhauled lineup did little to snap the Birds out of their recent offensive malaise, but that was the least of the team’s problems tonight, as Steve Trachsel suffered the most atrocious outing of any O’s starter this year. In his first start in two weeks, the veteran may well have signed his walking papers by getting pummeled for an unsightly nine runs in 1 2/3 innings, essentially ending the game just after it began. After this lopsided defeat, the Orioles will attempt to avoid the three-game sweep on Sunday.

Scouting David Hernandez - 5/24/2008 4:00:00 PM - Pente
David Hernandez is 4-0 with a 2.98 ERA through ten starts at Bowie and has quickly gotten the attention of scouts. Here's a detailed scouting report of Hernandez after his May 23rd start.

Orioles blanked yet again, fall to Rays - 5/23/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened a three-game series with the suddenly fearsome Tampa Bay Rays by taking another shutout loss, 2-0. In a frustrating encore of Thursday night-- and an all-too-familiar refrain of recent weeks-- the O’s once again saw a tremendous outing from their starting pitcher wasted by an alarmingly inept offense. Jeremy Guthrie delivered a superb 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, but was again the victim of criminally negligible run support. The O’s were blanked for the second time in three days, getting held to just four hits against Matt Garza and two relievers.

O's suffer walkoff loss in rubber game - 5/22/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles took a discouraging defeat in the rubber game against the Yankees, falling by a 2-1 score on Robinson Cano’s walkoff RBI single in the ninth. A fantastic performance by starter Brian Burres-- who held the Yanks to one run in 7 2/3 superb innings-- was wasted by an O’s offense that went silent for the second night in a row, managing just five hits against four Yankees pitchers. The Birds wasted numerous scoring chances, going hitless with runners in scoring position, and paid for it when Cano delivered in the clutch.

Tables turned, O's blown out by Yanks - 5/21/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a true letdown game, the Orioles followed their laugher over the Yankees with a forgettable blowout loss, 8-0. One night after the O’s excelled on all sides of the ball, the Yankees turned the tables by pounding starter Garrett Olson for six runs in just 2 2/3 innings en route to an easy win. Meanwhile, the Birds’ bats plummeted in a big way from their highest-scoring game of the season, getting stymied by Yanks nonentity Darrell Rasner for their second shutout loss.

O's demolish Yankees in 12-2 blowout - 5/20/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, in their most hugely satisfying game of the year, delivered a crushing beatdown on the hapless New York Yankees with a decisive 12-2 win. Few things bring more happiness than watching the Yankees humiliate themselves on their home turf, as the Birds’ emphatic whooping reminded us tonight. The night got off to a great start when former Oriole Mike Mussina was tattooed for seven runs without making it out of the first inning, and homeruns by Kevin Millar and Luke Scott-- as well as Adam Jones’s (pic) career-best four-hit game-- further continued the smackdown as the O’s built a double-digit lead. The offensive explosion was more than enough for Daniel Cabrera, who continued his stellar 2008 with a seven-inning gem.

O's lose pitcher's duel, drop finale, 2-1 - 5/18/2008 9:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ attempts for a perfect homestand were foiled as they lost the finale of their interleague series with the Nationals, 2-1. Sharp Nats lefty John Lannan held the O’s scoreless until the eighth, overshadowing an outstanding starting effort from Jeremy Guthrie, who allowed just one run in seven strong innings. The rain-soaked affair, which was delayed twice for a combined two-and-a-half hours, was the Birds’ first and only loss in an otherwise successful five-game home stint.

O's squeak past Nationals again, 6-5 - 5/17/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The red-hot Orioles secured their seventh win in their last eight games, notching another one-run victory, 6-5, over the Nationals. The O’s followed the same routine that has served them well during this 4-0 homestand. They got a solid outing from a starting pitcher, with Brian Burres working 6 2/3 strong innings; the offense delivered timely hits as Nick Markakis (pic) and Jay Payton homered and Alex Cintron went 4-for-4; and the late-inning bullpen duo of Jim Johnson and George Sherrill preserved a dicey lead at the end. Formulaic, maybe-- but this is one formula that is working like a charm for the Birds.

O's top Nats in interleague opener, 5-3 - 5/16/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles began their 2008 interleague schedule with a 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals in the so-called Battle of the Beltway. For the third straight game, the O’s overcame an early multi-run deficit, battling back from a 2-0 hole with help from leadoff hitter Brian Roberts (pic), who delivered two hits and scored twice. Starter Garrett Olson gutted through a five-inning effort with mediocre stuff before the sturdy bullpen slammed the door, with three relievers combining for four scoreless frames.

Payton slams Sox, O's finish sweep - 5/14/2008 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed a two-game sweep of the Red Sox with another outstanding win, riding Jay Payton’s go-ahead grand slam to a 6-3 victory. One thriller begets another as the Birds built on the momentum from Tuesday’s heroics, rallying back from a 3-0 deficit to stun the defending champions again. Daniel Cabrera’s sterling seven-inning effort kept the game close and set the stage for Payton, who capped a superb two-out rally in the seventh with a huge bases-loaded smash into the left field seats. All in all, this beatdown of a divisional rival was one of the most riveting series at Camden Yards in recent memory.

O's escape with win over Red Sox, 5-4 - 5/13/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their most electric, high-octane game of the year, the Orioles edged out the Boston Red Sox in a 5-4 thriller. A rousing, playoff-like atmosphere at Oriole Park was the backdrop for an intensely exciting game that featured a little bit of everything. The O’s, after falling behind 3-0 in the first through defensive blundery, stormed back against Sox ace Josh Beckett. Luke Scott busted out of his weeks-long slump with three hits, including a go-ahead three-run homer. Jeremy Guthrie pitched his heart out in six strong innings, with George Sherrill capping things off with a five-out save. And Jim Johnson (pic) gave perhaps the most incredible performance by an O’s reliever this season, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam by winning a fierce battle against Manny Ramirez. “I think everybody learned a little bit more about the Baltimore Orioles tonight,” said manager Dave Trembley.

O's run into Bannister, lose finale, 4-0 - 5/11/2008 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles were denied in their attempt for a four-game sweep, getting shut out for the first time this year in a 4-0 loss to the Royals. Right-hander Brian Bannister pitched an absolute gem for Kansas City, holding a patchwork O’s lineup to a whopping two hits in eight sterling innings, with the Birds failing to even get a runner to second base. The offensive blackout doomed a so-so Brian Burres to his fourth loss and snapped the Birds’ 12-game winning streak against the Royals. The Orioles, after completing a brutal stretch of 17 road games in 20 days, now enjoy a day off before facing the Red Sox in Baltimore.

Pitching, defense, 3-run HR lead O's - 5/10/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled back above the .500 mark with their 12th straight win over the Royals, 6-5. The O’s scored three runs before a two-hour rain delay and three runs after-- with Kevin Millar’s (pic) first-inning homer the biggest blast-- and though their 6-1 lead was nearly chipped away, the bullpen held strong to secure the victory. Garrett Olson earned his second win with a solid 5 1/3 innings, and Jim Johnson was stellar in relief, bailing the Birds out of a seventh-inning jam. The O’s will go for the four-game sweep on Sunday.

O's trump Royals again in 7-4 win - 5/9/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles continued their mastery of the Royals, using five pitchers and two homeruns to secure a 7-4 victory. Starter Steve Trachsel, likely pitching to keep his job, responded to the challenge with a solid 5 1/3 innings of work, settling down after a first-inning gopher ball. Meanwhile, the Birds’ offense posted its highest run total in May, with dingers by Melvin Mora and Aubrey Huff (pic) leading a 12-hit attack. With the win, the O’s have climbed back to the .500 mark for the season.

Cabrera's complete game snaps skid - 5/8/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles snapped their five-game losing streak behind a Daniel Cabrera masterpiece, beating the Kansas City Royals, 4-1, to open a four-game series. The Birds’ enigmatic right-hander took another huge step toward a breakout 2008 season, playing the role of stopper with an overpowering complete-game three-hitter. The Birds’ offense was again not much to write home about, but it only took one big swing by Nick Markakis-- who jacked a three-run homer-- to support the sensational outing by Cabrera.

O's Activate Bynum, Option Torres to AAA Norfolk - 5/8/2008 7:00:00 PM - Hoffman

Birds swept away with extra-inning loss - 5/7/2008 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles stumbled their way to an ugly three-game sweep at the hands of the Athletics, taking their second extra-inning loss of the series with a 6-5 defeat in 10. The first seven innings of the game played out in same old way-- solid starting pitcher makes one or two mistakes, offense disappears, O’s find themselves in a hole-- but this time, there was an added twist. The Birds, impressively, rallied for a three-run outburst in the eighth to erase a 4-2 deficit-- only to blow their newfound lead with a pair of crucial defensive mistakes in the eighth. In the end, Mark Ellis’s 10th-inning walkoff homer against Lance Cormier assured the Orioles of another frustrating finish.

O's lose 4th straight, fall under .500 - 5/6/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles slipped under .500 for the first time since Opening Day, taking their season-worst fourth loss in a row in a 4-2 decision against the Athletics. There’s really nothing to say about this loss that hasn’t already been said about the ones before it. Once again, the O’s got a solid outing from a starting pitcher; Brian Burres pitched better than his box score line, giving up three runs on a series of fluke hits. And once again, it didn’t matter, because an aggravatingly inept Orioles offense continued its extended slumber, managing a meager four hits against a decidedly un-intimidating group of A’s pitchers.

Brown-out: O's fall to A's in extras, 2-1 - 5/5/2008 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles slipped down to the .500 mark with a disappointing 10-inning loss to the Oakland Athletics, 2-1. The opener of the three-game set was highlighted by the pitcher’s duel between young lefties Garrett Olson (pic) and Dana Eveland, with the scoreless battle ultimately broken in the seventh on a series of A’s fluke hits. The Birds, after being shut out for 8 1/3 innings, plated a run in the ninth to tie the game, but Emil Brown’s two-out walkoff single off Jim Johnson in the 10th sent the Orioles home unhappy.

Bumbling O's drop rubber game, 6-5 - 5/4/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles bungled away a potential series win against the Angels, committing several costly mistakes in a frustrating 6-5 rubber game loss. Just as the offense finally got its bats working again-- collecting a season-high 15 hits-- the Birds still managed to sabotage themselves with appalling baserunning blunders and another atrocious outing by starter Steve Trachsel. After enjoying so many well-played, fundamentally sound games this season, the O’s went decidedly the opposite way on this one, with costly results. They’ll hope to regain their focus as they continue their West Coast trip to Oakland on Monday.

Punchless offense dooms O's in loss - 5/3/2008 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles were once again victimized by their badly slumping offense, falling to the Angels by a 3-1 score. A sleepwalking lineup that has scored just eight runs in its last four games was held to a meager three hits by a pitcher they should’ve pounded, Jon Garland and his 5.94 ERA. The nonexistent offensive output wasted another successful start by Daniel Cabrera, who worked 7 1/3 impressive innings, but a two-run hiccup in the sixth provided the margin of defeat.

O's escape in Anaheim, beat Angels, 4-3 - 5/2/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles began their longest road trip of the season on the right foot, sweating out a tense 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A revamped O’s lineup scratched together a few early runs for starter Jeremy Guthrie (pic), who made the lead hold up by delivering an outstanding seven-inning, three-hit performance. Guthrie’s first win of the year wasn’t official until closer George Sherrill pulled off a Houdini act in the ninth, escaping a one-out jam with the tying and winning runs stalking in scoring position. It was, in most respects, an exciting win the O’s never would’ve pulled off last year.

Bierd to DL, Cormier Up, Bynum to Rehab in Bowie - 5/2/2008 4:00:00 PM - Hoffman

Offense disappears, Orioles lose, 4-2 - 5/1/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened the month of May with a loss to their surprising division rivals, dropping the rubber game to the Rays by a 4-2 score. Carl Crawford’s two-run single off Jamie Walker in the seventh snapped a late-inning tie and ruined another fine outing by Brian Burres, who worked six strong innings but was pushed two batters too far. The sleepwalking O’s offense certainly did nothing to help their pitchers, managing just three hits and scoring only on an Adam Jones (pic) two-run homer. All in all, it was a disappointing series for the Birds, who lost two of three at home between a stretch of 17 road games.

Rays strike back, squash Orioles, 8-1 - 4/30/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In game two of the AL East Stalwarts Showdown, the lackadaisical Orioles were soundly defeated by the Rays, 8-1. One night after collecting seven runs and 19 baserunners, the Birds’ bats were shut down by Rays righty Andy Sonnanstine, who held them to a lone run in eight innings. Elsewhere, a serviceable start by fill-in Matt Albers was undone by a shaky O’s bullpen, with Bob McCrory’s (pic) dreadful big-league debut turning a close game into a blowout loss. The teams will play the decisive rubber game Thursday afternoon.

Olson, Orioles topple Rays, 7-4 - 4/29/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles kicked off a first-place showdown with the Tampa Bay Rays on a bright note, winning the series opener by a 7-4 score. Garrett Olson’s first big-league start of the year was a victorious effort, with the newly confident and poised young southpaw delivering 6 2/3 quality innings. The Birds’ offense, meanwhile, feasted on Jason Hammel and the Rays bullpen, bashing out 10 hits and drawing nine walks as every hitter reached base at least once. Aubrey Huff continued his mastery of his former team with a two-run homer, and the O’s held on to their early lead despite a spirited Rays late-inning rally.

O's and White Sox suspended after 11 - 4/28/2008 9:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a completely ridiculous, back-and-forth, sloppy and waterlogged game, the Orioles and White Sox slogged through a torrential downpour in the finale of their four-game series. A two-hour rain delay before the game was only the beginning of a hectic day of baseball, which featured two starters locked in a pitcher’s duel (despite one of them issuing seven walks), two closers blowing a save, baserunning gaffes, a ninth-inning comeback, and several inexplicable innings on a completely unplayable surface. And the craziest part of all? There wasn’t even a resolution. The game was suspended in extras with the O’s and Sox knotted at three, minutes after Juan Uribe’s solo homer in the 11th off George Sherrill tied the score and negated Ramon Hernandez’s (pic) go-ahead blast.

Orioles lose 6-1, Guthrie still winless - 4/27/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a rather nondescript game, the Orioles took their second loss in a row to the White Sox, 6-1. Paul Konerko’s two homeruns, including a tie-breaking blast in the sixth, led Chicago and doomed O’s ace Jeremy Guthrie to his sixth winless start of the season. The Birds’ bats were again held frustratingly silent by the ancient Jose Contreras, managing a meager five hits and tallying their only run on a Brian Roberts solo homer. The Orioles will attempt to salvage a split of the four-game series in Monday’s afternoon finale.

Orioles split twin bill with White Sox - 4/26/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their four-game series with the Chicago White Sox by splitting a day-night doubleheader, winning the opener by a 5-1 score but dropping the nightcap, 6-5. The afternoon was all about Brian Burres (pic), who tossed a magnificent eight scoreless innings for his team-leading third win, getting help from battery mate Guillermo Quiroz’s first major-league homerun. The second game, on the other hand, saw the O’s suffer a rare one-run defeat, with Brian Anderson’s game-winning RBI single off Randor Bierd breaking a 5-5 tie in the ninth. Still, the series split leaves the Birds with a 14-10 record and sitting in first place by percentage points in the AL East.

Down by five, O's rally back to win, 8-7 - 4/24/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In a wild, chaotic, thrilling rubber game, the Orioles pulled off their biggest comeback of the season, storming back from a five-run deficit to stun the Mariners, 8-7. Brian Roberts’s (pic) solo homerun in the top of the eighth snapped a seven-all tie, completing a stretch of eight runs in five straight innings for the suddenly hot O’s bats. A brutal outing by starter Adam Loewen put the Birds in an early 5-0 hole, but the club continue to chip away before Adam Jones spurned his former club with a game-changing bases-loaded double in the seventh. Meanwhile, the O’s bullpen did a tremendous job despite being forced into the game early, with five relievers holding the M’s to two runs in 6 1/3 innings. It was an all-around superb effort from a hard-working Orioles team that never says die.

Cabrera, O's eke out win over Mariners - 4/23/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles, behind one of the most sensational outings of Daniel Cabrera’s career, pulled out a tense win over the Mariners, 3-2. The enigmatic O’s right-hander unfurled an eight-inning, zero-walk gem, displaying great stuff, precise command, and excellent poise to overcome sloppy O’s fielding and baserunning. Nick Markakis made sure the stellar pitching performance wasn’t for naught, smacking a tiebreaking solo homerun in the eighth inning to improve the Birds to 6-1 in one-run games this season.

O's lose late game in late innings, 4-2 - 4/22/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles opened their first West Coast trip of the year with a disappointing, late-inning 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners. An otherwise spectacular outing by ace Jeremy Guthrie was undone in an ugly eighth inning, in which Jose Vidro’s two-out, two-run single off the gassed right-hander snapped a 2-2 tie. Meanwhile, the Birds’ bats were again mostly stymied by Seattle’s Felix Hernandez, and they squandered a couple of prime scoring opportunities in the first two innings to turn a shoulda-had-it win into a lackluster loss.

Pettitte dominates O's again in 7-1 loss - 4/20/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ otherwise successful homestand ended with a gloomy, soggy loss to the Yankees, 7-1. In a game marred by two rain delays, the Birds’ attempt to complete a three-game sweep were thwarted by their arch-nemesis, Andy Pettitte, who twirled seven shutout innings to notch his 23rd career win against the club. Meanwhile, the Yanks’ bats-- which were held to two runs in the first two games of the series-- busted loose for seven runs, with a bases-loaded double off George Sherrill (pic) in the ninth blowing the game open.

O's stymie Yanks again with shutout win - 4/19/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The high-flying Orioles stomped all over the Yankees for the second straight night, delivering a decisive 6-0 victory in front of a near-capacity crowd at Camden Yards. In another hugely enjoyable game, the Birds notched their first shutout win of the year behind starter Brian Burres-- who escaped some early jams to keep the Yanks off the board-- and surprise bullpen stalwart Jim Johnson (pic), who worked 3 1/3 innings of flawless relief for his first major-league save. Offensively, the O’s did most of their damage early, bashing the Yanks’ Ian Kennedy for four runs in three innings and cruising from there. The Orioles will go for the unexpected three-game sweep of the Yankees on Sunday.

Seven-run sixth powers O's over Yanks - 4/18/2008 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles began their season series with the rival New York Yankees in superb form, walking away with a hugely satisfying 8-2 win. The humming Birds clicked on all cylinders tonight, with their most notable contribution coming from Daniel Cabrera (pic), who held the powerful Yanks lineup to one run in six strong innings for his first win of the year. In the meantime, the O’s offense enjoyed its most prolific inning of the season by posting a seven-spot in the sixth, doing its damage entirely with singles. Nine different Orioles collected a hit tonight, with a Nick Markakis 3-for-3 night leading the charge. Though the O’s might not be competing with the Yankees for the division crown anytime soon, it’s nice to see they’re quite capable of handing them a beating in head-to-head play.

Amazing! O's rally in 9th, win in 10 - 4/17/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
In their most ridiculously exciting (and excitingly ridiculous) game of the year, the Orioles pulled off another incredible last-breath comeback, stunning the White Sox with a 6-5, 10-inning win. In a game full of twists, turns, and wacky managerial maneuvering, Adam Jones’s (pic) walkoff RBI single in extras-- just two hitters before a pitcher would’ve been forced to bat-- sent the boisterous Camden Yards crowd into jubilation. Adam’s dramatic knock was just one of several for the Birds, who-- having trailed by two runs in the ninth, down to their final out-- received clutch RBI hits by Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora to tie the score. The rousing, improbable win was the perfect way to fire up the team as they prepare to host the New York Yankees for a weekend series.

Bats go silent, O's fall to White Sox, 3-1 - 4/16/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles kicked off a two-game series with the Chicago White Sox with a frustrating defeat, 3-1. As it turned out, this game was decided before the first out was recorded, with Jim Thome’s first-inning three-run homer providing the most significant blow. A shaky Adam Loewen (pic) overcame the early blast and his own command problems to battle through a gutsy six-inning effort, combining with two relievers to keep the Sox off the board for the rest of the game. Sadly, the Birds’ bats were utterly lost against Jose Contreras, who stymied them over seven strong innings to make Chicago’s early lead hold up.

Blue Jays wax Trax, bash Orioles, 11-3 - 4/15/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ six-game home winning streak came to a screeching halt with an 11-3 thumping at the hands of the Blue Jays. A horrendous start by Steve Trachsel (pic) and shaky relief work from Greg Aquino put the O’s behind the eight-ball early, and the club never made a game of it in their first real blowout loss of the season. Offensively, the Birds managed three solo homeruns-- including Adam Jones’s first as an Oriole-- but nothing else against Shaun Marcum and two relievers, settling for a series split with Toronto.

Back on track: O's nip Blue Jays, 4-3 - 4/14/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles returned to Baltimore and to their winning ways, edging the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3, in the opener of a seven-game homestand. Cleanup hitter Kevin Millar (pic), coming off a brutal road trip, found his home surroundings more palatable as he drove in three of the Birds’ four runs, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, fill-in Matt Albers enjoyed a successful first start as an Oriole, working five strong innings for his second win, backed by outstanding long relief work from spring surprise Jim Johnson. The 8-5 Birds will try for the modest two-game sweep on Tuesday.

Six-run Rays fifth buries Burres, Birds - 4/13/2008 5:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles wrapped up their first 2008 road trip with a disappointing series loss to the Rays, dropping the finale by a 6-2 score. Brian Burres’s second start of the year turned from superb to disastrous in a single inning; after carrying a no-hitter into the fifth, the lefty was torched for six runs and five hits in an eight-batter span. The O’s were in no position to rally back, thanks to an impressive major-league debut by Rays right-hander Jeff Niemann. After the 2-4 road trip, the Birds hope their upcoming seven-game homestand in friendlier surroundings will return the spark to the team.

Ramon's 9th-inning homer lifts Orioles - 4/12/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles halted their losing slide in dramatic fashion, turning to last-at-bat heroics to topple the Rays, 3-2. The struggling Ramon Hernandez (pic) delivered his biggest hit of the season, a two-out homerun in the ninth that broke a two-all tie and got the Birds back on the winning track. For a third consecutive game, the Birds’ bullpen faltered in the late innings, with Carlos Pena hitting his second game-tying homerun off Jamie Walker in as many days (this time an eighth-inning solo blast) to spoil an impressive outing by starter Daniel Cabrera. Still, relievers Chad Bradford and George Sherrill restored order with a scoreless inning each to rack up a win and a save, respectively, for the victorious Birds.

Bullpen collapses, O's lose to Rays, 10-5 - 4/11/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The suddenly struggling Orioles suffered their most brutal defeat of the young season, blowing a late-inning three-run lead in a 10-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The formerly sensational bullpen suffered an eye-popping collapse, with three relievers coughing up eight runs in 1 2/3 innings to turn a 5-2 lead into a blowout loss. Carlos Pena’s game-tying three-run homer off Jamie Walker kicked off the Rays rally, while Dennis Sarfate (pic) inexplicably turned into Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn with a horrendous four-walk outing (including one that pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth). After such inspired play from the Birds during the first week of the season, this dreadful performance sparked cringe-worthy flashbacks to the previous decade of unsightly Orioles baseball.

O's Option Moore to AAA Norfolk, Recall JJ Johnson - 4/11/2008 10:00:00 PM -
After Friday night's 10-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Orioles announced that they have recalled RHP Jim Johnson and optioned IF Scott Moore to AAA Norfolk.

Streak snapped, O's lose two at once - 4/10/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles’ six-game winning streak came to a screeching halt with not one but two losses to the Rangers, 3-1 and 5-4. A week’s worth of high-flying momentum didn’t help the Birds during a forgettable twi-night doubleheader that saw them triple their season loss total in a six-hour span. In the opener, a gutsy outing by Steve Trachsel was wasted by an offense that never got going and an uncharacteristically sloppy defense. The nightcap saw the O’s battle back from a late-inning three-run deficit, only for the bullpen to suffer its first misstep of the season when Chad Bradford (pic) allowed a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth. There’s nothing like a doubleheader sweep to take the air out of a team’s sails.

O's spoil Texas opener, win 6th straight - 4/8/2008 7:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles donned the away jerseys and continued their winning ways, defeating the Texas Rangers, 8-1, to open their 2008 road schedule. The Birds’ first jaunt away from Camden Yards did nothing to halt their momentum, as Brian Burres (pic) celebrated his birthday with a quality six-inning effort in his first start of the year. Meanwhile, the sizzling O’s offense continued to rake. Aubrey Huff led the way with a career-best four-hit game, adding four RBIs to his league-leading total, while Luke Scott-- the AL’s leading hitter for average-- added power to his game with his first homerun. The 6-1 Orioles are off to their best start in 10 years, and currently hold the top record in the American League. Whatever happens next, for however long this lasts, this is one amazing experience.

Four of a kind: O's finish sweep of M's - 4/7/2008 8:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles completed an exhilarating four-game sweep of the Mariners, 5-4, to cap a superb season-opening 5-1 homestand. Aubrey Huff’s (pic) solo homerun snapped an eighth-inning tie and led the Birds to their first four-game sweep in four years. Once again, the O’s got contributions from every source, with Brian Roberts raking three hits, Melvin Mora parking his second homerun, and the bullpen continuing its sensational work with three more scoreless innings. The Orioles’ hot start is their best since 2000, and the team is in a jubilant mood as it prepares to take its act on the road for the first time this year. “It’s great for our team and it’s great for our fans,” manager Dave Trembley said. “Never underestimate what you can accomplish if you set your mind to it.”

Orioles Magic! O's score 3 in 9th to win - 4/6/2008 6:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles pulled off an unbelievable, last-at-bat, come-from-behind victory against the Mariners, 3-2, for their fourth straight win. For eight innings, the O’s were absolutely befuddled by dominant M’s starter Felix Hernandez and seemed destined for their first shutout loss. But after “King Felix” was inexplicably removed in the ninth, the fun began. Despite being down to their last out, the Orioles erased a two-run deficit against the faulty M’s bullpen, plating the tying run on a wild pitch to the backstop before Luis Hernandez (pic)-- of all people-- delivered a game-winning RBI single to send the crowd into hysterics. The season is only one week old, but man, has this been fun.

O's walk all over sloppy M's in 6-4 win - 4/5/2008 1:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles enjoyed another well-played, full-team effort in notching their third straight win, a 6-4 victory over the Mariners. The Birds’ offense continued its hot start to the season, led by three-hit efforts from Luke Scott and Melvin Mora (pic), and showed impressive patience by working an imploding M’s pitching staff for nine walks. The O’s outplayed the self-destructive Mariners in every aspect of the game, playing flawless defense in contrast to Seattle’s four errors, while getting another stupendous effort from their bullpen, which combined for 4 1/3 flawless innings in relief of shaky Adam Loewen.

O's use long-ball power to top M's, 7-4 - 4/4/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles notched another well-played team victory, getting contributions from all around the batting order and pitching staff in a 7-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. Ramon Hernandez (pic) and Kevin Millar each went 3-for-4 with a homerun, while Melvin Mora added a two-run blast and dazzled defensively. Steve Trachsel, in his return to the Orioles, turned in one of his usual solid workmanlike efforts, and the revamped relief corps continued its early brilliance (with one exception). “[When] you get pitching, defense, and timely hitting, you’re going to win,” said manager Dave Trembley.

Huff silences boos, blasts Birds to win - 4/2/2008 11:00:00 PM - Folkemer
The Orioles secured their first win of 2008 with a late-inning comeback victory over the Rays, 9-6. Despite a record-low crowd at Camden Yards, those who braved the cold to attend witnessed a pretty darn entertaining ballgame. Aubrey Huff (pic), booed boisterously in the early goings of ’08, won the home fans back to his side with a pair of huge hits: a homer and a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth. The O’s also got a stupendous performance out of their bullpen, with four relievers combining for five scoreless innings, highlighted by Randor Bierd’s fantastic big-league debut and George Sherrill’s first save as a Bird. It may not be often this year in which so many things click into place for the Orioles. But when they do, it’s a thing of beauty.

The Orioles kicked off the 2008 season with a forgettable stumble, falling to the Tampa Bay Rays by a 6-2 score. A day that started with great promise-- a rebuilt team, an enthusiastic crowd, and the usual Opening Day festivities and hoopla-- was tempered by a lackluster defeat, the Birds’ first home opener loss in eight years. Jeremy Guthrie (pic) was tagged for six runs in his first-ever Opening Day start, while the O’s offense, after grabbing a first-inning lead, was held scoreless the rest of the way.
