Steve Johnson allowed one unearned run in eight innings, but it was enough to knock off the Tides 1-0 Monday afternoon from Victory Field.
Johnson (1-3) pitched tremendously as he picked up Norfolk's first complete game of the season, as he allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out eight. He needed just 95 pitches to navigate his eight innings, with 68 of those pitches going for strikes.
The only trouble Johnson ran into came in the fourth inning, as he issued a leadoff walk to Gorkys Hernandez before making a wild pickoff throw that allowed Hernandez to advance all the way to third base. One out later, Matt Hague plated Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to account for the only run of the contest.
Former Tide Rick VandenHurk (1-0) earned the win for Indianapolis, as he allowed five hits in five shutout innings of relief. Indy starter Justin Wilson tossed three shutout innings before being removed due to injury while warming for the fourth inning.
Doug Slaten tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
