    Against the Grain

We keep talking about players not making the team because they have options or are on minor league contracts and can be sent down while other players could make the team because they are out of options.

However, lets look at it from another angle.   If and when the bullpen is overused, Buck is going to possibly want a fresh arm.   A bullpen who is full of players with no options and veterans (Hunter) who wouldn't be sent out even if they did have an option, it might be preferable to have a Steve Johnson on the team who can be optioned back and forth to Norfolk all year long.    Send Johnson down, bring Brad Brach up for 10 days and you have fresh arm. Bring Johnson back up and send Brach back down (Brach has options as well).     Send Johnson down, add Huntzinger to the 40 man (and I believe he would have options), and bring another fresh arm up for 10 days.

Works with T.J. McFarland also, who has options.

This also might be an advantage to Jemile Weeks.   You need an extra OF because David Lough has a nagging injury.   Send Weeks down and call up Urrutia for 10 days.   When Lough feels better, Weeks comes back.     No players lost when optioning them down.    More continuity.
