Bud Norris tosses gem; O's shut out Red Sox 4-0

    Written by Chris Slade

    Overview

Tonight's game opens a three-game set with Boston and featured Bud Norris and Jake Peavy on the mound. Adam Jones homered in the first inning to get the scoring under way. Nick Markakis launched a no doubter onto the flag court in the 5th inning, scoring Ryan Flaherty. The fourth and final home run of this game also came via the long ball when Flaherty hit his third homer of the season to dead center in the bottom of the 7th. Norris cruised through eight innings and Tommy Hunter pitched a scoreless 9th to finidh the shutout.

    Starting Pitching

Bud Norris threw one of the better outings of his career tonight, holding the Red Sox to just three hits over 8 strong innings of work. After Brock Holt singled to lead off the game, Norris retired 11 straight before Daniel Nava doubled with one out in the 5th. The Red Sox never threatened to score from that point on as Norris was on his A game, consistently working ahead with his fastball, which ranged from 92-95 MPH tonight. Norris recorded six K's, including Mike Napoli twice. He picks up a much deserved 5th win to even his overall record.

    Final Line: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, Win

    Relief Pitching

Tommy Hunter made his glorious return from the DL and worked a scoreless 9th inning.

    Hitting

The ball was flying out of the yard tonight as the Oriole's four runs were all driven in by way of the long ball. Adam Jones continues to swing a hot bat and finished 3-for-4 after his solo shot in the 1st. Nick Markakis also had a multi-hit game, extending his hit streak to 14 and raising his average to .312, which leads the team. Ryan Flaherty scored and drove in a run on his solo bomb, finishing 2-for-3 in the game.

    Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights

Jonesy had the night off from the field and David Lough played solid center field defense in his place, tracking down a few deep fly balls at the warning track with no issue.

Ryan Flaherty made a nice diving catch on a David Ortiz line drive to rob him of a hit.

    Key Moments In The Game

The Orioles taking advantage of the few mistake pitches Peavy made for three key home runs.

    Other Notes/ Musings

During the broadcast, Mike Bordick wished Gary Thorne a happy birthday, to which Thorne responded, "I'll kill you."

Manny Machado will likely be handed a suspension for his weekend behavior versus the A's in the coming days.

Will J.J. Hardy ever homer again?

Game 2 is tomorrow night at 7:05 ET with Chris Tillman and Brandon Workman on the mound.
