Tonight's game got under way at 7:05 ET with Mark Buerhle and Kevin Gausman on the mound. The Orioles jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run shot by Delmon Young in the 1st. Caleb Joseph hit an RBI single in the 2nd to extend the lead to 3-0. Melky Cabrera drove in the lone run off Gausman to 5th to cut the lead to 3-1. The Orioles scored again in the 7th on an RBI double by Nick Markakis. The Orioles held on for the 4-2 win with Zach Britton shutting the door in the 9th.
Kevin Gausman made his third start for the Orioles tonight and he turned in another quality start. He was bringing the heat as usual and recorded a pair of strikeouts on 98 mph fastballs to Jose Bautista in the 1st and Dioner Navarro in the 4th. He did a good job of keeping his heater out of the middle and making good pitches when he needed to. The Jays were able to draw 3 walks against him but only one of them scored on Melky Cabrera's RBI single in the 5th. Gausman earned his 2nd win.
Final Line: 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K, Win
Brian Matusz replaced Gausman in the 7th and retired the side, including a pair of strikeouts.
Ryan Webb worked the 8th and allowed a run to score on an RBI groundout from Edwin Encarnacion.
Zach Britton worked the 9th and picked up the save.
Mark Buerhle is having a sensational year for the Blue Jays but the Orioles were able to get their hits against him tonight and made them count too. Nick Markakis led off the game with a single and Delmon Young, quite the savvy choice for the two-hole tonight, immediately put the O's ahead with a two-run shot. In total the Orioles scored four runs on eight hits. Markakis delivered the knockout punch in the 7th, driving in Jonathan Schoop (who doubled) on an RBI single after which Buerhle was removed.
Defensive Highlights/ Lowlights
The Orioles played an error free game and turned two double plays, one of which ended the game.
Key Moments In The Game
Delmon Young giving the Orioles a quick lead against a good veteran pitcher.
Nick Markakis knocking Buerhle out of the game with his RBI single in the 7th which gave the Oriole bullpen a nice three-run cushion to work with.
Other Notes/ Musings
Miguel Gonzalez will be returning soon but I think Kevin Gausman has earned a stay in the rotation. Who stays, who goes? 6-man rotation? Stay tuned
Gary Thorne still can't pronounce Edwin Encarnacion's last name right and I think he's just set in his ways at this point.
Friday night at the Yard tomorrow. Ubaldo Jimenez and Drew Hutchison are the probable pitchers.
