    Orioles Prospect HOTSHEET: Mid-August Edition

    Written by Chris Slade

The month of August has arrive and we have now reached the midway point of the month. It's time to take a look at which Oriole farmhands doing their best so far this month to finish their seasons on a high note.

This time our number one hottest performer on the HOTSHEET is can't even legally vote yet but that hasn't stopped him from tearing up the Gulf Coast League. I'm talking about...

    1) Jomar Reyes - 3B - GCL Orioles (R)

    Age: 17

    OH Prospect Rank:

    August Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    12 .392 56 22 6 3 1 13 4 8 .419 .660 1.079

Reyes is the youngest player on the GCL O's this year and probably the best. The young third baseman has shown why the Orioles gave him a nice signing bonus in the offseason as one of the crown juwels of Fred Ferreira's international recruting class.

    2)  Brian Gonzalez - LHP - GCL Orioles (R)

    Age: 18

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    August Numbers so far:

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    2 0 0 0.00 9.2 5 0 1 10 .156 23.1% 1.37

Gonzalez, the O's 3rd round pick this year, has now worked 20.2 innings with the GCL O's without allowing an earned run. That's one heluva way to start you're professional career. He can stick around, I guess...

    3) Christian Walker - 1B - Norfolk Tides (AAA)

    Age: 23

    OH Prospect Rank: 14

    August Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K OBP SLG OPS
    13 .300 50 15 2 0 2 4 5 14 .364 .460 .824

Walker continues to bring the noise with his bat on a nightly basis. He has handled the AAA transition with relative ease and still looks like the frontrunner for Orioles minor league hitter of the year.

    4) Austin Anderson - 3B/SS - Aberdeen Ironbirds (A-)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    August Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    12 .333 42 14 3 0 1 7 3 5 .391 .476 .867

Anderson makes his debut on the HOTSHEET as he has been smoking the ball lately. Now, he is a polished 22 year old from Ole Miss that should be hitting well against this competition, so I wouldn't consider him a legitimate prospect just yet. But, he's been a lone bright spot in an otherwise dreadful Ironbirds offense so I figured I would include him.

    5) Zach Davies - RHP - Bowie Baysox (AA)

    Age: 21

    OH Prospect Rank: 7

    August Numbers so far

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    2 2 0 1.46 12.1 10 0 1 9 .217 56.8%   1.98

If you didn't consider Zach Davies a top ten prospect in the organization at the beginning of the season, there's no doubt you do now. He's been fantastic in his first season of AA ball at the young age of 21. He's been rolling of late, with an 8-2 record, a 1.72 ERA, and 51 K's over his last ten starts, covering 62.1 innings.

    6) Adrian Marin – SS – Frederick Keys (High A)

    Age: 20

    OH Prospect Rank: 11

    August Numbers so far:

G AVG AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    11 .293 41 12 4 0 2 8 5 10 .383 .537 .920

Marin's adjustment to Frederick hasn't been a smooth one at the plate but he appears to have turned it around late in the season which is what we like to see. The K/BB ratio this month seems like a promising indicator that he will continue to hit well the rest of the way.

    7) Steven Brault - LHP - Delmarva Shorebirds (Low A)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: 15

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    3 2 1 1.50 18 15 0 5 13 .227 52.8% 2.59

Brault continues to pitch well with consistency as he has all season with the Shorebirds. Is still don't understand why a polished lefty drafted out of college last year han't been moved up to the Keys yet but Brault still looks like an intriguing arm to follow.

    8) Tim Berry - LHP - Bowie Baysox (AA)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: 10

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    2 1 0 1.50 12 7 0 4 10 .273 46.9% 2.53

Berry's first two starts of the month have been solid and he has now lowered his ERA to 3.31 in 133.1 innings on the season in his first full year of AA ball. He continues to struggle with the walks against righthanded bats but that's the main negative in an otherwise impressive year.

    9)  Glynn Davis - CF - Bowie Baysox (AA)

    Age: 22

    OH Prospect Rank: UR

    August Numbers so far:

    G AVG AB H 2B
3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS
    13 .292 48 12 4 0 1 5 1 12 .308 .438 .745

How about Glynn Davis? He appears to have put himself back on the legitimate prospect radar with his breakout performance at the plate this year between Frederick and now Bowie. The power numbers are still below average but his feel for hitting has improved and with his blazing speed and solid outfield defense, could profile as a 4th outfielder with the Orioles in the coming years.

    10) Mike Wright - RHP - Norfolk Tides (AAA)

    Age: 24

    OH Prospect Rank: 8

    August Numbers so far:

    GS W L ERA IP H HR BB K AVG GB% FIP
    3 1 2 1.35 20 19 0 2 9 .250 32.4% 2.60

Mike Wright has been Mike Wrong on more outings than not this year for the Tides so it's encouraging to see him finally turn a corner with his recent performances.

HM/ Josh Hart - CF - Low A - Hitting .303 albeit with weak power numbers thus far in August. He may crack the list at the end of the month.

    The Not Sheet…Uh Oh…

Henry Urrutia - LF - AAA - .250/.265/.271 with 0 HR's in 49 PA's - He's back from the DL which is a plus but the disappointing season continues for Big Hank, who is wiffing at a 32.7% clip so far in August.

Parker Bridwell - RHP - High A - 0-2, 8.10 ERA, .262 AVG - The up and down trend continues for Bridwell who I wouldn't be surprised to find in the HOTSHEET next time around after two rough outings to begin the month of August.

Michael Ohlman - C - AA - .233/.314/.267 with 0 HR in 35 PA's - Ohlman finds himself in the Not Sheet again as its been a disappointing transition to AA coming off a Carolina League MVP performance at Frederick in 2013.

David Hess - RHP - Short Season A - 1-0, 6.00 ERA, .298 AVG - Hess, an all-star with the Ironbirds this summer, has hit a small road bump in his first two August outings.

    Becoming A Prospect?

Janser Severino - RHP - Delmarva Shorebirds (Low A)

You be the judge. He's a bit old for just getting started with Low A ball but the results have been solid of late and the lanky 6'2", 140 pound righthander does touch mid-90's with his fastball.

    Prospects On The DL:

Dylan Bundy - RHP - A+ - Bundy was questionable at best on whether he would see time with the Orioles in September but his latest DL trip with a pulled lat removes all doubt on that front. Hopefully, he gets in a healthy full season of work in 2015.
