Ask yourself, from an outsider standpoint - Who had more leverage in their amateur negotiation than the first pitcher taken in the 2012 first year player draft as a draft eligible softmore than Kevin Gausman?
He was chosen number four by a team starved for good starting pitching that had made some strides towards respectiblity this season. The team's attendence had risen by almost 25% because of playing winning baseball. A team that had saved over one hundred thousand dollars on their slot signings. A pitcher who has a major leage quality changeup to go with a mid ninties sinking fastball. A young man who looks like what they look like and was recommended by a former coach of the Orioles, his coach in college. He was the best pitcher on a team that perennially plays for the college championship. And he was wanted back.
No one had more leverage.
