    Tony's Take/Benson Scouting Report

After reviewing video of Benson last year it's pretty obvious what the Orioles and probably more importantly what Leo Mazzone likes about Benson. Although he doesn't have overwhelming stuff, when he's on, he pitches on the corners with a 89-90 MPH fastball and a late tight 82-83 MPH slider along with a good changeup that he likes to use away from lefties. His slider, which he likes to use on the outside portion of the plate is his out pitch to righties.

This is a good trade for the Orioles since Julio was basically replaced by Hawkins and with Sendy Rleal nearly ready and with Aaron Rakers available, Julio was expendable. Maine has never been able to equal his lower minor league success above Double-A. His breaking ball has never really improved and although he still has good command of his fastball, it's hard to live off that at the major league level. I still believe Maine will end up with a decent career as a setup/long man, but I don't see him being anything more than a 5th starter for a lower Division team.
