The Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles this morning sent catcher Matt Wieters and pitchers Chris Tillman, Kam Mickolio, Ryan Keefer, and veteran Esteban Yan to their minor league camp.
Wieters and Tillman may be the organization's top two prospects, so they need to prepare for their up coming minor league seasons. Both could start the year as high as Bowie, but Wieter's struggles this spring may have him starting at Frederick like manager Dave Trembley suggested.
No surprises here really. Mickolio is a project of sorts and was not on the 40-man roster. With Greg Aquino and Rocky Cherry pitching so well so far and with rule 5 pick Randor Bierd needing a spot, he was starting the year in the minors regardless of how he pitched this spring.
I'm surprised Yan was not just released though, but maybe they want to see if he's willing to go to Norfolk and become depth.
Keefer is a good story. I'm rooting for his comeback from Tommy John surgery. He had a good arm before the injury so it will be nice to see how he pitches this year. He most likely starts the year at Norfolk, but could be back in Bowie.
