The Orioles Designated Jason Garcia for Assignment and traded their July second 16 year old international slot to the Milwaukee Brewers late Thursday evening.
That slot allows for the Brewers to spend ~$850,000 on international talent, usually 16 and 17 year olds. The Orioles have not come close to spending their allotment recently and have traditionally traded off their excess. The trades for RHP Damien Magnifico!
On to Mr. Magnificent.
His deal is that he has a 100 MPH arm.
Keith Law has said of him…
“96-97 mph heat with a short but effective slider at 83-85 mph.” If he can continue to refine his skills and pitch the way he did in Biloxi this season, Magnifico is not only a must add to the 40-man roster, but a future stud in the making in the Brewers’ bullpen.”
And MLB Pipeline
“RHP Damien Magnifico
MLB Pipeline Rank: 29
2016 Age: 25
The Brewers added Magnifico to the 40 man roster prior to the Rule 5 deadline in November after he had a very successful season serving as the closer for AA Biloxi. In 53.2 innings he posted a 1.17 ERA and saved 20 games. He doesn’t strike out many hitters (17% in 2015) in spite of the fact that his fastball can reach triple-digits and his control leaves plenty to be desired at this point, but a guy who throws as hard as Magnifico will always get an extra opportunity or two as a bullpen arm. He’s a candidate to reprise his role as closer, but this time for AAA Colorado Springs.”
So, Magnifico!
