What we know:
A switch-hitting catcher who was part of the seemingly underwhelming package of prospects the Orioles got for Kevin Gausman, Cumberland is a former 2nd round pick who has a little pop in his bat and is not afraid to take a walk. With a one-plane upper cut swing, there are concerns he will struggle with upper level pitching who will take advantage of his holes. Defensively he’s not awful, but he’s not an asset behind the plate either.
What we don’t know:
Will he be able to hit enough to overcome his lack of glove behind the plate? Walks are a big part of his offensive games, will upper level pitchers give in once they find those holes? Can he close those holes?
What we think:
Cumberland’s upside is a bat first backup catcher. He needs to prove his ability to hit upper level pitching and become more consistent defensively if he’s to get a major league shot.
