JT Brubaker made his major league debut tonight and with adrenaline flowing, he was sitting 97-99 MPH with a 72 MPH curve and 85 MPG slider in the 1st two innings.
The Yankees though broke through on the rookie in the bottom of the 3rd with two outs when Mike Tauchman took a 95 MPH and hit an opposite field two-run homer to give the Yankees a 2-0 leave.
Meanwhile, Yankees starter Jonathan Loaisiga was just dominating the
Orioles, tossing four hitless innings allowing just a walk and reach of error.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Yankees collected three straight two-out
singles but Brubaker kept them off the board by striking out 2B Tyler Wade with the bases loaded. Earlier in the inning, Brubaker caught Gary Sanchez looking which infuriated Sanchez getting him tossed from the game. At one point it appeared Sanchez bumped the umpire so a suspension could be coming.
The Yankees got to Brubaker again in the 5th when Gleyber Torres hit a one
out double to left to score Brett Gardner to make it 3-0 and end Brubaker’s
debut. Wilbur Font was brought on a struck out the next two batters to keep it
3-0. Brubaker ends his debut allowing three earned runs on eight hits while
striking out five in four and third innings.
In the 6th, with a no-hitter still intact, the Orioles collected their first
hits and scored their first when Jose Iglesias broke up the no-hitter with an infield single then scored on a scorching triple to right field by Andrew Velazquez to make it 3-1. Dwight Smith Jr. then drew a walk and then Renato Nunez lined a double in to the gap scoring Velazquez to make it 3-2 and putting runners in 2nd and 3rd with one out.
That was enough for the Yankees and they brought in Dan Otero to face Rio
Ruiz. Ruiz got behind 0-1 then lined a Otero slider down the left
field line for a two-run double to give the Orioles their first lead of the
day, 4-3. Otero then settled down and struck out Chance Sisco
and Mason Williams.
With the top of the lineup and two lefties coming up, Brandon Hyde went to his bullpen and brought in Richard Bleier. After getting Gardner out, Trauchman singles up the middle before Bleier got Torres to ground out to
Ruiz at third, though it moved Trauchman into scoring position. With the right handed Giancarlo Stanton up, Hyde went to his pen and brought in Hunter Harvey. Harvey came in and did what he’s done all year and struck out Stanton to keep it 4-3.
After the Orioles went quietly in the top of the 8th, Harvey came
back out for the bottom of the 8th and promptly struck out the side
on 12 pitches. Harvey has yet to allow a hit and has struckout 15 so far this
season.
Despite a the second hit of the season by Chris Davis in
the top of the 9th, the Orioles went quietly. Hyde went to his
closer Mychal Givens to try and close out the game but he was
met by a DJ LeMahieu single to start the inning. Not happy with himself, Givens slammed the ball back into his mitt, got back on the mound, and struck out the side to preserve the 4-3 win for the Orioles.
The Orioles split the series and improved to 5-8 on the season.
