The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Opening Day at Fenway Park. 4,452 fans were in the Park to witness the contest.
John Means started and pitched a gem; he allowed one hit over 7.0 innings of work while striking out 5. Means gave up a lead-off single to Enrique Hernandez and proceeded to pick him off first base one batter later. Xander Bogaerts reached first on a Maikel Franco error to lead off the second inning. After that, it was all about Means.
Means retired the next 18 straight batters he faced to finish out the day. In the end, he faced one batter over the minimum and needed 97 pitches to earn his first win of the 2021 season.
Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 4, 1 2B, 2 RBI), batting clean-up, just missed a grand slam in the 6th inning; the ball hit off the top of the green monster resulting in a 2 RBI double.
Anthony Santander (1 for 3, 1 RBI) finished out the Orioles’ scoring with an 8th inning RBI single.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 4 with a run scored from the lead-off spot while Trey Mancini went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in his return to the field after battling colon cancer.
Tanner Scott (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 2 K) pitched the 8th inning and turned the game over to Cesar Valdez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K), who earned the save.
