The Baltimore Orioles lost their third game in a row at OPACY to the Boston Red Sox 14-9 Sunday. The loss completed a sweep of the O’s by the AL East rivals who have now won six in a row since being swept by the Orioles in Fenway Park last week.
The theme of the game was the homerun; eight total balls left the yard, two by the Orioles and six by the Red Sox. Maikel Franco (2 for 4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 BB) and Trey Mancini (1 for 4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 BB) were the Orioles’ homerun hitters while JD Martinez hit 3, Rafael Devers 2 and Alex Verdugo hit 1 for the Red Sox.
Despite the nine runs, the Orioles were 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position. For the series they were 4 for 29 with RISP.
Cedric Mullins continues to perform as he went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 walk from the lead-off spot. Ryan McKenna, who pinch hit for Anthony Santander in the 6th inning, went 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 runs scored; the triple was his first MLB hit.
Jorge Lopez (4.0 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR) started for the Orioles and took the loss. Four relievers took to the mound with Paul Fry, pitching the 9th inning, the only one not touched for a run (1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K).
For the record, Devers hit 4 homeruns off Orioles pitchers in the series, hitting at least one in each game.
