The Baltimore Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics by a score of 3-2 Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum.
John Means showed why he leads the rotation; the southpaw made a quality start, his fourth of the season, and set the tone for the win.
Means allowed 2 runs on 3 hits over 7.0 innings. In facing 25 Oakland hitters, he struck out 9 and walked 2. The only down side was that 2 of the 3 hits allowed were homeruns by Sean Murphy and Mitch Moreland. Means currently is pitching to a 1.70 ERA and 0.84 WHIP.
The trio of Paul Fry (0.2 IP), Travis Lakins, Sr. (0.1 IP) and Cesar Valdez (1.0 IP) finished out the game. Despite allowing 2 hits, Valdez earned his 6th save of the season.
The Orioles offense was simply Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays. Mullins, currently batting .337, hit a 3rd inning homerun off A’s starter Mike Fiers. He added a RBI fielder’s choice in the 5th inning and finished the night 1 for 4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI.
Not to be outdone, Hays went back to back with his homerun off Fiers. He finished the game 1 for 4 with a run scored and 1 RBI.
Ryan Mountcastle was the only Oriole batter to tally multiple hits in the game as he went 2 for 4.
