The Washington Nationals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 12-9 on Saturday. The Orioles have now lost five games in a row and nine of their last ten games.
The game started with a bang. Freddy Galvis’ (1 for 5, 1 Run, 1 2B, 1 RBI) opened the scoring with a RBI double. Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 Runs, 4 RBI) then hit a grand slam and the O’s were up 5-0. That lead became a 3 run deficit (9-6), however, by the end of the 4th inning.
Despite scoring nine runs, the Orioles were 4 for 11 with runners in scoring position.
The Nationals scored all their runs against the trio of starter Bruce Zimmermann (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 Runs, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR allowed) and relievers Adam Plutko (2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 Runs, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR allowed), who took the loss, and Tanner Scott (1.0 IP, 4 H, 3 Runs, 2 earned, 1 K).
Hitting in the clean-up slot, Anthony Santander went 3 for 4 with a homerun, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI and a walk.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 5 with a run scored while Maikel Franco went 2 for 4 with a double and 1 run scored.
The Orioles early inning barrage managed to chase Washington starter Jon Lester (4.0 IP, 6 runs, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K) from the game.
