The Baltimore Orioles opened a three-game series in Anaheim with the LA Angels Friday night where they got an up-close look at the phenom that is Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani did not make a good impression on the Orioles. The 26 year old two-way player homered in both the third and fourth innings and scored the winning run in the ninth inning on a close play at the plate which was upheld on review.
For the record, Ohtani was the DH and went 2 for 4 with 2 homeruns, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, a stolen base and a walk.
The game got off to a good start with Trey Mancini (2 for 5, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI) hitting his 15th homerun of the season in the 1st inning.
Domingo Leyba (1 for 2, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 2 walks) followed that homerun with his first MLB homerun in the 2nd inning.
Anthony Santander’s (1 for 4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 3 RBI, 1 walk) bases-clearing double in the 3rd inning helped the Birds take a 6-2 lead after 2.5 innings.
Friday’s starter Keegan Akin (3.0 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 3 K) allowed Ohtani’s 3rd inning homerun and an additional run which drew the Angels within 2 runs before exiting the game. Making matters worse, former Oriole Jose Iglesias took Akin deep in the 2nd inning.
Dillon Tate (1.2 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 K) came on to pitch the 4th and allowed Ohtani’s second homerun. By the time the inning was over, the Angels had a 1-run lead.
Austin Hays (2 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) tied the game in the 6th inning with his RBI-double and set the stage for showtime.
Ohtani worked a one-out walk off Paul Fry (0.1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB), stole second base and scored the winning run on a Jared Walsh single, tagging Fry with the loss.
