The Baltimore Orioles road trip moved to Tampa Bay and with it the wins. Baltimore’s 6-1 win over the Rays on Monday gave the team a winning streak of three games.
The Orioles relied on the right arm of Spenser Watkins to record the win. Watkins provided the Orioles a quality start and ultimately improved his record to 2-0 over 3 starts. He faced 24 batters and allowed 1 run on 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7 over 6.0 innings; 60 of his 92 pitches thrown were strikes.
Watkins’ teammates gave him a 2 run lead before he even took the mound. Singles by Austin Hays (3 for 5. 1 2B, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) and Trey Mancini (2 for 4, 1 run scored) to open the game set the stage for Ryan Mountcastle’s (1 for 5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB) RBI double and Anthony Santander’s (0 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 BB) RBI sac fly to give Watkins the lead.
The Orioles scored 4 more runs for Watkins in the 6th inning and Pat Valaika (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 2 RBI) and Kelvin Gutierrez (1 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 BB) were in the middle of it.
The bullpen took it from there with Cole Sulser allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in the 7th inning, Paul Fry struck out 1 of the 3 batters he faced in the 8th and finally, Tyler Wells struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in the 9th.
The win marks just the second three-game winning streak of the season for the Orioles.
