Tuesday’s 13-1 loss to the New York Yankees was the polar opposite of Monday’s win by the Orioles. There was no cat, Cedric Mullins had his throw on Anthony Rizzo’s third inning single hit second base for a run scoring error, miscommunication between him and Anthony Santander allowed a DJ LeMahieu double and Alexander Wells was optioned back to Norfolk after the game.
Oh, and a newly called up Luis Gil allowed just 4 Orioles hits, 1 walk and struck out 6 over 6.0 innings in his MLB debut. His debut was necessitated by Yankees pitcher and Tuesday’s original scheduled starter Gerritt Cole being placed on the Covid-IL.
Wells optioning was a result of a night in which he surrendered 6 runs on 7 hits over 2.1 innings. He struck out 2 and hit a batter as well. Wells took the loss, dropping his season record to 1-2 with a 7.64 ERA in 17.2 innings.
The Orioles lone run was scored by Mullins (1 for 4) on a Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 4) RBI double in the eighth inning. Despite the error, Mullins has now had a hit in 12 straight games.
Maikel Franco was 1 for 3 with a double, Austin Hays was 1 for 4 and Ramon Urias was 1 for 3. Urias has a four-game hitting streak and is .368 with a double and a homerun over his past seven games.
Keegan Akin allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 in 3.0 solid innings of relief.
