The Baltimore Orioles dropped Saturday’s game with the Boston Red Sox by a score of 16-2. The game was so ugly that manager Brandon Hyde called on starting catcher Austin Wynns to pitch the eighth inning.
Wynns faced four batters and gave up a Hunter Renfroe homerun. He threw 9 pitches, 6 for strikes, ranging in speed from 46-68 mph. He was saved from further damage by a diving catch made by Austin Hays on a Jarren Duran hit to right field. At the plate Wynns went 1 for 3 and he made his day complete by throwing out Duran on a stolen base attempt in the first inning.
Jorge Lopez started for the Orioles and allowed 7 runs on 9 hits with 1 homerun allowed, 2 walks, 1 strike out and 2 wild pitches thrown over 3.1 innings. He took the loss and his record (3-13) is almost as ugly as the final score was.
Adam Plutko poured gasoline on the fire in the fifth inning by giving up 7 runs on 5 hits, including a Bobby Dalbec two-run homerun. He lasted just two-thirds of the inning, walked 2 and struck out 1.
Every Boston starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run with the exception of catcher Christian Vazquez (0 for 4).
Red Sox starter Chris Sale, known to have shredded a jersey or two in his career, shredded the Orioles offense in his first start in two years following an elbow injury and Tommy John surgery. He walked none and struck out 8 of the 20 batters faced over 5.0 innings, scattering 6 hits in the process. The only blemish on Sale’s performance were back-to-back homeruns hit by Hays (1 for 4) and Trey Mancini (1 for 4) in the 3rd inning, both coming with two outs.
The only other Orioles offensive highlights were Pedro Severino going 2 for 4 and Ryan McKenna going 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.
