The Tampa Bay Rays used the homerun, multiple homeruns in fact, to beat the Orioles 9-2 on Monday. Six of Tampa’s runs were the result of the homerun as the Rays hit four through the air and one on land. Orioles pitching surrendered three solo homers, a two-run homer and an inside-the-park homerun to Brett Phillips. Brandon Lowe hit two of those Rays homeruns.
Starting pitcher Matt Harvey (4.2 IP, 5 Runs, 5 Hits, 1 Walk, 6 Strikeouts, 1 Hit Batter) allowed 2 homeruns, Paul Fry (0.2 IP, 3 Runs, 4 Hits, 2 Walks) allowed 2 homeruns, including Phillips inside-the-parker, and Fernando Abad (2.0 IP, 1 Run, 3 Hits, 1 Strikeout) allowed one.
For the record, Harvey was the losing pitcher.
In contrast, the Orioles used small ball to score their first run via a sac bunt by Cedric Mullins (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI). Their second run was a result of a Trey Mancini (1 for 4, 1 RBI) RBI double.
Jorge Mateo went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Just when you might have thought it couldn’t get any worse, the Orioles losing streak is now 12 games.
