The losing streak ended Wednesday when the Orioles put one “in the win column” by beating the LA Angels 10-6. The 1988 Orioles can rest easy knowing their infamous 21 game losing streak is safe for the time being. The O’s rode the power of three homeruns in winning the game.
Cedric Mullins (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 3 RBI) hit his 22nd homerun of the season in the 1st inning, Anthony Santander (3 for 4, 1 double, 3 Runs Scored, 1 RBI) also homered in the 1st making the Orioles the first team to hit multiple homeruns off Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani. DJ Stewart (1 for 2, 2 Runs Scored, 2 RBI, 2 BB) also homered off Ohtani in the fourth inning. Entering the game Ohtani had given up a total of 8 homeruns.
A 10 batter 8th inning by the Orioles led to a winning 5-run rally, a rally that began with two bases loaded walks. Austin Hays (1 for 1, 2 RBI) hit a pinch hit double during the rally and Mullins hit a RBI sac fly to cap it off. Tyler Wells pitched a three up-three down 9th inning, striking out 1, to make the rally hold up.
Tanner Scott pitched two-thirds of the eighth inning with 1 strike out to get credit for the win, his fifth.
Chris Ellis started and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, struck out 3 and gave up a homerun to Jared Walsh through 3.0 innings of work.
Connor Greene, Cole Sulser and Dillon Tate pitched a combined 4.1 scoreless innings to give the offense time to rally. The trio allowed just 1 hit while walking 2 and striking out 3.
Baseball is a funny game, who would have taken odds that Ohtani would go 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts against Baltimore pitching in Camden Yards or that he would give up 3 homeruns to the Orioles?
