For the second night in a row, an Orioles starter made a quality start only to see the game finish in a loss. The Tampa Bay Rays staked the Birds to a 3-0 lead and then took advantage of the bullpen to win the game 4-3.
Dillon Tate (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 WP) was the first reliever to allow the Rays to score; both runners he inherited crossed the plate. Cole Sulser (1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 K, 1 BB) was up next and both blew the save and lost the game when he surrendered a Randy Arozarena two-run homerun in the 8th inning.
The Orioles bats failed to mount a comeback over the final two innings with four groundouts and two strikeouts.
John Means tossed 6.1 quality innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts, and looked visibly disappointed and upset when manager Brandon Hyde took the ball from him in the 7th inning. Means then watched helplessly as his start and his team’s lead became loss #88.
Pedro Severino went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Austin Hays (1 for 2, 1 run scored) added a pinch-hit triple in the 6th inning.
Jorge Mateo went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and Ryan Mountcastle (0 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 BB) came up just short of a grandslam homerun in the 5th inning with what was scored as a sac fly.
