Making his MLB debut in the 8th inning and trailing 5-0, Manny Barreda probably didn’t know what to think. The right-hander induced two fly ball outs and then struck out Michael A Taylor to put his first MLB inning in the books. Twelve Orioles batters, nine hits and nine runs later, the Birds were leading 9-5 on the way to a 9-8 win over the Kansas City Royals. With a line of 1.0 IP and 1 K Barreda was the winning pitcher in his debut.
The 8th inning began with a Cedric Mullins (0 for 4, 2 Runs Scored, 1 BB) walk. A single, a double, another walk and a single, all without an out gave the Birds 2 runs. Two more singles, a fielding error and finally a Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 5, 2 Runs Scored, 2 RBI) homerun, his 26th, and the Orioles were in the lead by four.
Dillon Tate (0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 Home Run Allowed, 1 Hit Batter) made it interesting and close before Tyler Wells (0.1 IP) came in to get the final out and the save, his second of the year.
Matt Harvey started and gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 9 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Austin Hays (1 for 5, 1 2B, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI) extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
Kelvin Gutierrez went 3 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI while Ryan McKenna went 2 for 3.
Hopefully Barreda realizes all wins won’t be this “easy”.
