The Baltimore Orioles have 19 games remaining in their 2021 season and if Sunday’s game with the Toronto Blue Jays was any indication of what is to come, the season cannot end soon enough. The Orioles lost 22-7 on Sunday and if you go back to the 7th inning of the nightcap to Saturday’s doubleheader, the O’s were bludgeoned by a run total of 33-8. Sunday’s game alone was U-G-L-Y!
Toronto hit two grand slam homeruns among the five total homeruns they hit in the game. Lourdes Gurriel,Jr got revenge in a sense for Fernando Abad’s “decking” of him in Friday night’s game by hitting a pair of homeruns, a grand slam and a two-run shot. Teoscar Hernandez hit the other grand slam, making the score 14-3 at the time.
Maybe the Orioles wanted their game score reported by the NFL Network.
Zac Lowther started and just did not have it. The lefty allowed 7 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 over 2.0 innings. He spotted the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead after the top of the first after surrendering Gurriel, Jr’s grand slam and allowed that lead to extend to 6-0 after Vladimir Guerrero, Jr’s solo homerun in the second inning.
Spenser Watkins relieved Lowther and was lit up by the Blue Jays, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and surrendering 2 homeruns in one-third of an inning.
Mike Baumann was the next “dead man walking” and allowed 6 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks, 2 strike outs and 1 homerun allowed over 3.0 innings of work.
Eric Hanhold got the call next and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with with a walk over 1.2 innings.
By the time Conner Greene (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) and Abad (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K) entered the game, the Blue Jays bats had run out of power.
Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) hit his 28th homerun of the season, tying him with Cal Ripken, Jr for the team’s rookie homerun record.
Anthony Santander (1 for 3, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI , 1 BB) hit his 17th homerun while Austin Wynns (2 for 4, 1 run scored, 3 RBI) hit his 3rd of the year.
It is a good thing Monday is a day off for the Birds, they need it.
