Leading 3-2 going into the 9th inning, the Orioles brought Tyler Wells in to lock down the win. Four batters into the inning, the Yankees scored twice to take the lead. A walk, a single, a flyout and a double steal (one stolen base upheld upon review) set the stage for Brett Gardner’s two-RBI single and Wells exit from the game.
Dillon Tate (0.2 IP) came in and got the final two outs.
Aroldis Chapman retired the side in the O’s half of the ninth and tagged Wells (0.1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB) with the loss. The final score: 4-3.
In the end, the Orioles squandered the three runs that Austin Hays (2 for 4, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI) provided them with his two homeruns. Hays hit a solo homerun in the 6th and a 2-run homerun in the 8th.
Ramon Urias went 1 for 4 with a double.
Cedric Mullins (0 for 4) robbed Gary Sanchez of a homerun with a highlight reel catch in the 2nd inning.
John Means made his 23rd start of the season and gave the Orioles 5.2 innings of work. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, struck out 4 and gave up a Gio Urshela homerun in the 3rd inning.
Conner Greene (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) and Cole Sulser (1.0 IP, 1 K) kept the Orioles in the game until the fateful ninth.
