The Orioles endured rain during Thursday’s game, a game that took 4:04 to play with no rain delays, to defeat the Yankees 3-2 in 10 innings.
Joey Gallo hit a two run homerun in the second inning to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, a lead that held up until the O’s tied the game in the ninth. DJ Stewart (1 for 2) singled with one out, Kelvin Gutierrez pinch ran for him, and a wild pitch, a groundout and another wild pitch later Gutierrez scored the game-tying run.
Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) hit his 29th homerun of the year in the sixth inning, surpassing Cal Ripken, Jr for the team’s rookie season homerun record and putting the O’s on their way towards catching and ultimately defeating the Yankees..
After going 3 up, 3 down in the top of the 10th the Yankees intentionally loaded the bases by walking Cedric Mullins (2 for 4, 1 BB) following a Richie Martin (2 for 4) single. Mountcastle struck out and then Austin Hays (1 for 5, 1 RBI) hit a single to left field for the walk-off win.
The bullpen corps of Fernando Abad (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB), Dillon Tate (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 K), Conner Greene (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) and Cole Sulser (2.0 IP, 2 K) held the Yankees scoreless in relief of starter Chris Ellis. Ellis allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Sulser (5-4) was the pitcher of record.
