The Baltimore Orioles shut out the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Monday night, altering the NL East standings. The win by the Orioles denied the Phillies a chance to keep pace with the Atlanta Braves; the Phillies lost a game in the standings and are now 3.0 games out of the NL East lead.
The Orioles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and John Means took it from there. Means allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6 over 6.2 innings to win his 6th game of the season. Playing in a National League ballpark required Means to hit as well and he went 1 for 3 with a double (the Orioles only extra-base hit) at the plate. He also reached base in the second inning on a bunt that the Phillies chose to forceout the lead runner at second.
Means tossed 105 pitches, 65 for strikes, in navigating the Philadelphia lineup. He struck out Bryce Harper twice and left the MVP candidate muttering to himself.
The Orioles hit four singles in the first inning to account for their 2 runs.
Pedro Severino went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Ryan McKenna went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Anthony Santander went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored.
Austin Hays went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and a walk.
Cole Sulser (1.1 IP) and Tyler Wells (1.0 IP) held the Phillies hitless in relief of Means with Wells earning his 3rd save.
