Trailing 4-2 entering the 8th inning Wednesday night, the Baltimore Oriole tried to mount a comeback. They fell short, however, only scoring one run and ultimately falling to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.
Austin Hays (1 for 3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 BB) walked with one out in the 8th and reached second on a passed ball. Hays eventually scored on a Pedro Severino (1 for 4, 1 RBI) double. Severino was then thrown out at home attempting to score on a Pat Valaika (2 for 4) single. The Orioles fell short, allowing the Phillies to keep pace with the Atlanta Braves.
Cedric Mullins went 1 for 4 with a triple and a walk.
Richie Martin went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Keegan Akin made the start and finished with nothing to show for his efforts. The young southpaw allowed 1 run on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6 over 5,1 innings of work. Akin was not involved in the decision and is 2-10 on the season.
Conner Greene allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with a walk over 0.2 innings and took the loss, his second.
With 10 games left in the 2021 season, the Orioles have a 50 win season as a goal as well as influencing the AL Wild Card race with games remaining both with Boston and in Toronto.
