Drafted by the Orioles in the sandwich competitive balance round between the 2nd and 3rd round and signed to an underslot $800K bonus, Trimble was drafted for his power, speed combination but struggled in his first limited pro exposure this summer. He’s the #26 prospect for his upside.

What we know: Drafted as a 21-year old draft eligible COVID Freshman, Trimble put up good numbers at the University of Southern Mississippi slashing .345/.414/.638/1.052 with 17 home runs in 268 PAs. His one draw back being a very pedestrian, some may say “yellow flag”, 19 BB to 46 K ratio. At 6-foot-0, 180 pounds, Trimble doesn’t have the frame that suggests there is a ton more development after 21-year old, but he does have a loft in his swing that allow for him to tap into his good raw power.

After getting his feet wet against younger talent in the Florida Complex League, he struggled badly against Low-A pitching slashing .169/.276/.185/.461 while striking out in 27.6% of his at bats while collecting just one extra base hit, a double. Trimble’s swing looked long and he struggled with professional offspeed pitches as well as pitches in on his hands.

Defensively he played centerfield and leftfield and showed off a plus arm at times. He misread some balls and took some bad routes, so he’ll need to clean up the defense a bit as well, but the tools are there for him to be solid average defender at all three outfield spots.

What we don’t know: Does he have major league bat speed? Will he be able to tap into his average raw power tool? Can he hit pro level pitching?

What we think: Trimble certainly was a disappointment in his first taste of pro ball but it was only over 17 games so don’t get too caught up in his first bad stats. Saying that, there were some yellow flags on bat speed in watching his at bats, though he may have just been going through a slump and not seeing the ball well. we’ll have a better idea of what the Orioles have after next season where he’ll probably start off back in Delmarva.
