Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi held the Birds hitless for 5.2 innings and allowed just one baserunner over that span. Austin Hays (1 for 4) reached base on a Xander Bogaerts throwing error in the second inning.
Baltimore starter Spenser Watkins (4.2 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 hit batter) spotted the Red Sox a first inning run that was matched by Anthony Santander’s (1 for 4, 1 RBI) 8th inning RBI single.
A quartet of relievers held Boston scoreless over a combined 3.1 innings until Jorge Lopez took the mound in the 9th.
The game remained tied until the 10th. With Jorge Mateo (pinch runner) on second, Ryan McKenna (0 for 0, 1 BB) was intentionally walked before Robinson Chirinos (0 for 4) bunted. His bunt was fielded by Red Sox reliever Hirokazu Sawamura who then overthrew third base, allowing Mateo to score the winning run.
Lopez (2-1) was the winning pitcher after allowing a walk and striking out 1 over 2.0 innings.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.
Ryan Mountcastle went 1 for 4.
