Even though the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 Wednesday night, the team must be wondering where the 2021 Orioles have gone. A year ago, the Rays won the season series 18 games to 1, following Wednesday’s win, the Rays have an 8-7 record against the O’s.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom on the ninth, and with one out, Jorge Mateo (2 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) hit a laser shot to center field for his 8th homerun of the season that tied the game at 4. A walk and a single with two outs put the winning runner in scoring position but Anthony Santander (1 for 4, 1 run scored) struck out to end the threat.
Tampa’s Randy Arozarena hit a two run double in the 10th for the winning margin.
Tampa Bay pitching did cool off Ramon Urias (0 for 4) but Trey Mancini went 2 for 4 with a walk and Rougned Odor went 2 for 5 with a RBI.
Adley Rutschman went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a walk.
Tyler Wells started and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2 homeruns) with 5 strikeouts over 4.1 innings. He left the game in the 5th with back discomfort.
Four relievers kept the Orioles in the game and Jorge Lopez (4-6) (1.0 IP, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 H, 2 BB) ultimately suffered the loss.
