Having said goodbye to Trey Mancini on Monday, the Orioles said goodbye to All-Star reliever Jorge Lopez before Tuesday’s game with the Texas Rangers. Lopez was traded to the Minnesota Twins for four prospects before the trade deadline.
The team stepped up with pitching and hitting to assure a closer would not be needed on this night.
Facing his former team, Jordan Lyles (8-8) held the Rangers to one run on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7 in a 6.1 inning start. The bullpen covered the final 2.2 innings; three relievers combined to allow 1 run and 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3.
Jorge Mateo made sure the game wouldn’t be close. The shortstop hit 2 homeruns and finished the night 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI. Adley Rutschman continues to be a doubles-machine and went 2 for 5, both hits a double, with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Those two accounted for 6 of the O’s runs and helped the team have an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
Yusniel Diaz made his MLB debut as a pinch hitter for Anthony Santander (2 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI) in the 9th and struck out.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
