On the national stage Sunday night, the Baltimore Orioles used the opportunity to shine and defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-3 in Williamsport, PA. The nation saw what Orioles fans have watched for months; a young team that is exciting to watch and is seemingly never out of any game they play.
The Orioles players and manager Brandon Hyde took part in a time-honored LLWS activity by sliding down the grass hill on pieces of cardboard. The Orioles Bird was even spotted “driving” down the hill in a cardboard car.
The Orioles broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with Jorge Mateo’s (2 for 4, 3 RBI) bases clearing double. Three runs scored on the play with Rougned Odor (0 for 1, 1 Run Scored, 2 BB) sliding head-first into home to score on the back end of the play.
Anthony Santander went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored.
Ramon Urias went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and a walk.
Adley Rutschman went 1 for 4 with a run scored and a walk.
Starter Dean Kremer allowed 1 run on 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4 over 5.1 innings. He did not factor into the decision.
Cionel Perez (1.0 IP, 1 K) was the pitcher of record and is now 7-1 on the season. Despite allowing a Xander Bogaerts homerun in the ninth, Felix Bautista (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K) earned his 8th save of the season.
