Beginning the final stretch of the 2022 season, with 20 games in 20 days, the Baltimore Orioles travelled north of the border for a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. In a game of homerun or nothing, the Orioles lost the game 6-3 as well as 3 homeruns to 2. The Orioles failed to take advantage of what was a “bullpen game” for the Blue Jays.
Toronto’s Matt Chapman hit a solo homerun in the 2nd inning that was topped by Adley Rutschman’s (1 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 2 RBI) two-run homer in the 4th. George Springer topped Rutschman’s blast with a three-run homerun in the 5th, giving the Blue Jays a 4-2 lead.
Chapman’s second homerun, a two-run blast in the sixth, extended the lead to 6-2. Gunnar Henderson (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI) hit his second homerun of the season with two out in the 9th to account for the final score.
Limited to 5 hits in total, Cedric Mullins (1 for 4, 1 3B, 1 Run Scored) and Jorge Mateo (1 for 3) filled out the Orioles offense.
Jordan Lyles (10-11) took the loss in a 5.0 inning start where he allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (2 homeruns surrendered), walked 1 and struck out 5.
Michael Baumann allowed 1 hit, struck out 2 and hit a batter in 2.0 innings of relief.
