Contrary to what MLB may have made you to believe, there were other games played on Tuesday besides the one at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ. The Baltimore Orioles hosted the Detroit Tigers in Sarasota, FL in one of the fifteen other games on the slate.
Baltimore defeated the Tigers 5-2 on Tuesday to move their Spring record to 4-1. Grayson Rodriguez made the start for the Orioles and tossed 2.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, a Zach McKinstry homerun to left in the first inning, while walking 1 and striking out 2. Rodriguez faced the minimum in the second, aided by an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Dillon Tate and Mike Baumann followed and each struck out 1 in 1.0 inning of work. Nick Vespi (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 1 strikeout pitching the fifth inning.
Chayce McDermott allowed 1 hit, walked 2 and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings while Alex Pham struck out 2 in 2.0 innings of work.
The Orioles did most of their damage in the fifth inning, scoring 4 unearned runs, all coming with two outs. A fielding error by Detroit pitcher Devin Sweet opened the flood gates. Daniel Johnson (3 for 3, 2B, 3B, 2 R), Jackson Holliday (1 for 3, 1 R), Heston Kjerstad (0 for 3, 1 R) and Maverick Handley (0 for 0, 1 R, 1 BB) (pinch running for James McCann [1 for 3, 1 2B, 2 RBI]) all scored following the error.
Coby Mayo went 1 for 2 with a double, 1 RBI and a walk.
Ryan Mountcastle went 0 for 3 with 1 RBI.
Errol Robinson went 1 for 1.
