One day removed from hitting a combined nine homeruns against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles fell to the New York Yankees 5-3 on Monday. The game in Tampa was not as close as the score indicated, however.
The game looked promising out of the gate. Jackson Holliday (2 for 3, SB) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a Kolten Wong (0 for 2, 1 BB, SB) walk and advanced to third on a double steal. Runners at second and third with no outs; the Orioles bats were unable to cash in on that situation.
Baltimore did plate a run in the second inning when Daniel Johnson (1 for 2, 1 R, SB, 1 CS) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Michael Perez (1 for 2, 1 RBI) single. The Orioles added two more base runners in the inning but were unable to score any additional runs.
Innings three through eight saw the Orioles retired in order three times and unable to score with two runners on base with less than two outs twice. Two runs were scored in the ninth inning on RBI singles by Donta Williams (1 for 1, 1 RBI) and Connor Norby (2 for 2, 1 RBI) but it was too little, too late.
The New Yorkers plated four runs in their half of the first off of starter and pitcher of record Julio Teheran (0-1). The big blow was a bases loaded double by Yankees catcher Austin Wells. Teheran, who lasted just 2.1 innings, allowed 4 runs on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1.
Mike Baumann walked 1 and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings of relief. Out of minor league options, Baumann has faced 15 batters without allowing a run.
Bruce Zimmermann allowed 1 run on 6 hits in 3.0 innings pitched while walking 2 and striking out 2; he pitched with traffic on the bases each inning.
Nolan Hoffman (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) closed out the game for Baltimore.
Errol Robinson went 1 for 1 with a double and 1 run scored.
Tyler Nevin went 2 for 3.
