On a night that felt more like late July in Baltimore (game time temp. reported at 85 degrees), the Baltimore Orioles shut out the New York Yankees 2-0 on Monday. The Yankees, fresh off a 30 run and 37 hit weekend in Milwaukee did out hit the Orioles 7-4 but they did not out score them.
Grayson Rodriguez (4-1) threw 101 pitches (54 strikes) in his sixth start of 2024 but came up one out shy of a quality start. The right-hander scattered 5 hits over 5.2 innings while walking 3 and striking out 3. Rodriguez did work through base runners in every inning but managed to overcome and keep the New Yorkers off the scoreboard on the way to earning his fourth win of the season.
Gunnar Henderson (1 for 3, HR, 2 R, RBI, HBP) opened the home half of the first with his 10th homerun of the season (currently tied with Mike Trout for the MLB lead). A Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 3, BB) single later in the first and a Jordan Westburg (1 for 3) single in the second were the only Baltimore hits until Adley Rutschman (1 for 4) singled in the eighth. Henderson was hit by a pitch in that eighth inning and scored when Anthony Volpe booted a ball of the bat of Anthony Santander (0 for 4).
Santander was credited with an outfield assist in the sixth inning when he fielded a ball off the bat of Austin Wells and threw to Henderson covering secon base to get a force out on Giancarlo Stanton.
Cionel Perez (1.0 IP, H), Yennier Cano (1.1 IP, H) and Danny Coulombe (1.0 IP) combined in relief to keep the Yankees in check. Coulombe earned his first save with his ninth inning effort.
