It would not be surprising if some in attendance at Camden Yards or watching on MASN on Friday evening wondered if the Baltimore Orioles somehow lost their equipment van. The Birds were wearing their home white pants with their black City Connect jersey, capped off with the Armed Forces hat on a night when many in attendance were sporting the replica 1954 jerseys that were given out in honor of the team’s 70th anniversary (the number 70 was even cut into the outfield grass). Pick a theme, any theme.
Regardless of what you wanted to commemorate, in the end everyone was celebrating a 9-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Starting pitcher John Means (2-0) staked the Mariners to a first inning 1-0 lead but Gunnar Henderson (2 for 5, 3B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) answered that with a leadoff homerun in the home half of the first. The Orioles would add on four more runs in the inning mainly due to Colton Cowser‘s (2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) two-RBI double that was preceded by a botched Seattle throw to secon on what may have been a double play.
Means gave the team a quality startby allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (HR) with 4 strikeouts and ultimately was credited with the win.
Baltimore scored a bunch of runs (4) in the seventh inning by bunching triples by Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 3B, R) and Henderson with doubles by Adley Rutschman (2 for 4, 2B, 2 R, RBI) and Austin Hays (1 for 1, 2B, R, RBI), all before an out was recorded. Hays scored the ninth run of the evening on a wild pitch.
Kyle Stowers went 1 for 4 and Ryan O’Hearn went 1 for 3 with a run scored before being pinch hit for by Hays.
Mike Baumann allowed a hit and a walk pitching in the eighth while Keegan Akin pitched a clean ninth inning.
