The Baltimore Orioles fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 in Wednesday’s regularly scheduled game. Once again there was a rain delay (1 hr. 25 min.) that ended the starting pitcher’s day early and once again the Orioles were a different team after the delay.

Prior to the delay, the Birds posted three runs on five hits over 4.0 innings, afterwards it was just a single run in the ninth with three hits over the final 5.0 innings, two of those hits came in the ninth inning. The Orioles did not hit a single extra-base hit in the game.

Uncharacteristic of the Orioles was the sloppy sixth inning in which they committed two errors which allowed the Cardinals to take a 4-3 lead. Additionally, the Orioles ran themselves out of a ninth inning rally when Cedric Mullins (1 for 1) misread a play, ran past second base and was doubled up at first base.

There is some cause for concern as starter John Means (3.0 IP, H, 2 BB, K) left the game after three innings with “elbow discomfort”.

Anthony Santander and Ryan O’Hearn both went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI in the game.

Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 3 with a run scored, 1 RBI and 2 walks.

Cole Irvin (4-2), who pitched following the delay allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 6 hits (HR) with 2 strikeouts and took the loss.
