Sunday’s game in Chicago began with a 1 hour 40 minute rain delay (shocker) and ended with a 4-1 win by the Baltimore Orioles over the Chicago White Sox. The win completed a four-game sweep of the Pale Hose and may have taken some of the sting out of the Orioles three-game sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals earlier in the week.
A dominant start by Kyle Bradish (1-0) paved the way for the sweep. Bradish tossed 7.0 no-hit innings, walking 4, striking out a career high 11 batters as well as picking a runner off first base. It took 103 pitches (63 strikes) for Bradish to whitewash the Sox.
Danny Coulombe relieved Bradish and it took just five pitches for the potential combined no-hitter to end. Danny Mendick hit a pinch-hit homerun to left field off Coulombe. Coulombe allowed 1 run on 1 hit (HR) with 1 strikeout in 0.2 innings of work. Yennier Cano (0.1 IP) finished the eighth inning and Craig Kimbrel (1.0 IP, K) pitched a clean ninth to earn his 12th save of ’24.
Offensively, Adley Rutschman (2 for 4, HR, R, 2 RBI) hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Birds on the board and gave then what would be the winning margin. Colton Cowser (1 for 4, HR, R, RBI) homered to open the eighth inning and a James McCann (0 for 3, RBI) sac fly scored Cedric Mullins (0 for 0, R, SB), who pinch ran for Anthony Santander (0 for 3, BB), to cap off the scoring for Baltimore.
Jordan Westburg went 1 for 4 with a run scored and Ryan Mountcastle went 1 for 4 with a double.
Jorge Mateo went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and a stolen base.
