The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 5-3 in the Bronx on Tuesday night. That win, coupled with the Minnesota Twins 4-1 loss to the Miami Marlins, secured a spot in the MLB Playoffs for the Orioles. Baltimore will more than likely be the #1 seeded Wild Card team and will host their series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards October 1-3.
Despite surrendering a 4th inning homerun to Aaron Judge, Dean Kremer (8-10) gave the Orioles a solid start. Kremer pitched 5.0 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits (HR), walked 2 and struck out 3 to earn the win. He also made a nifty play on an Austin Wells groundball to record the 1-3 putout in the fourth inning.
The bullpen took it from there with six relievers combining to finish out the game. Keegan Akin (0.2 IP, BB), Jacob Webb (0.1 IP, K), Yennier Cano (0.2 IP, 2 H), Gregory Soto (1.0 IP, BB, K) and Seranthony Dominguez (0.2 IP) kept the Yankees off the board. Cionel Perez (0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 H) wasn’t quite as effective as the others and Dominguez nailed down his 11th save.
Orioles pitching held the gauntlet of Juan Soto, Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to a combined 2 for 11 with a homerun, 1 run scored, 2 RBI, a walk and 4 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Orioles set the pace with homeruns by Anthony Santander (1 for 3, HR, 2 R, RBI, BB), Ramon Urias (1 for 4, HR, R, RBI) and Colton Cowser (1 for 4, HR, R, RBI). The homeruns came in consecutive innings (6th-8th).
Ryan O’Hearn went 2 for 2 with a double and 1 RBI. Ryan Mountcastle pinch hit for O’Hearn in the sixth and went 1 for 2.
Heston Kjerstad went 0 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk.
