Held down to two hits through the first six innings, the Baltimore Orioles mounted a rally of sorts in the seventh and eighth innings before falling to the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 in front of 14,203 fans on Jackie Robinson night around MLB.
Cedric Mullins (2 for 3, HR, R, RBI, BB, SB) hit his fourth homerun of the campaign in the seventh to finally put the Orioles on the scoreboard.
Back-to-back two out doubles by Gunnar Henderson (2 for 4, 2 B, R) and Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 4, 2B, R, RBI) and a Gary Sanchez (1 for 4, RBI) RBI single added two runs to the Baltimore tally. The rally fizzled in the ninth despite a Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 1) pinch-hit single.
Orioles batters struck out 12 times, worked 2 walks and went 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Charlie Morton (0-4) made the start and lasted 5.0 innings. He got through the first two innings by allowing just one single. He gave up a run in the third and pitched a clean fourth. The fifth opened with an Angel Martinez triple and he scored on a sac fly. A walk preceded a Steven Kwan two-run homerun put the Guardians up 4-0. Morton left the game following a leadoff single in the sixth and took the loss with a line of 5.0 IP, 5 R, 7 H (HR), 3 BB, 2 K.
Cionel Perez (1.1 IP, R, 3 H) gave up Cleveland’s sixth run and now has a 14.21 ERA.
Scott Blewett made his Orioles debut and allowed 1 hit with 2 strikeouts over 1.2 innings.
Matt Bowman closed the game with a clean ninth inning.
