The Baltimore Orioles returned to Camden Yards on Tuesday and recieved good news with the return of Cedric Mullins and Jordan Westburg to the roster. Than news was tempered by the fact that Jorge Mateo was put on the 10-day IL with left elbow discomfort. You may remember that that elbow required surgery after a collision with Gunnar Henderson in July of 2024 and that Heston Kjerstad collided with Mateo in the outfield on May 31st against the Chicago White Sox, hyper-extending that left arm.
In the end, the Orioles suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the MLB best Detroit Tigers (44-24).
Making the start was Cade Povich (1-5), who required 98 pitches (65 strikes) in order to naviagte 4.2 innings. Povich exited the contest after surrendering a second triple to Detroit’s Zach McKinstry. Ultimately the pitcher of record, Povich allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, including a Spencer Torkelson homerun in the fifth inning, while walking 1 and striking out 6.
The relief trio of Seranthony Dominguez (1.1 IP), Yennier Cano (1.0 IP, H, 3 K) and Scott Blewett (2.0 IP, 2 H) kept the Tigers off the board but were rewarded with a run in the eighth and a Westburg (1 for 3, HR, R, RBI, HBP) homerun in the ninth.
The Baltimore offense tallied just 6 hits off of Detroit pitching with Jackson Holliday (2 for 4, 2B, 2 R) and Henderson (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) each hitting a pair.
Ramon Laureano went 1 for 3 with a walk.
Orioles hitters struck out 11 times and went 1 for 4 with runners in scoring position.
