The Baltimore Orioles lost a close one to the Cleveland Guardians (51-50) on Wednesday, falling by a score of 3-2. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth but promptly surrendered the lead when Cleveland tallied two runs in the bottom of the frame. Baltimore tied the game in the sixth only to see Cleveland score the eventual winning run in the home half of the eighth.

Opportunity Lost

Baltimore saw base runners eliminated on double plays in both the first and second innings. Ugly base running in the third proved costly. Ramon Urias walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Cedric Mullins double. Jacob Stallings grounded to third and Urias was tagged out by a considerable distance. Mullins then was picked off second as he attempted to steal third, totally changing the trajectory of the inning.

Offensive Bright Spots

Jordan Westburg led off the fourth with a double, advanced to third on Gunnar Henderson‘s groundout and scored on a Ryan O’Hearn sacrifice fly.

Jackson Holliday led off the sixth inning with his team-leading 14th homerun.

O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano accounted for the only other Baltimore hits on the night.

Eflin Returns

Zach Eflin made his return from the IL and threw 84 pitches (53 K’s) over a 5.0 inning start. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5 over that span; he didn’t factor in to the final decision.

The Bullpen

Andrew Kittredge and Yennier Cano pitched clean innings in the sixth and seventh, respectively. Colin Selby (0-2), not so much. The right-hander was needed only because Felix Bautista, we learned after the game, alerted the dugout that he didn’t feel right and was unavailable. Selby was tagged with the loss after allowing a two-out double to Bo Naylor and a RBI-single to Steven Kwan.

The Orioles went a meek one-two-three in the ninth to end the game.

Pending the final results of the Tampa Bay-White Sox game and the Texas-Athletics game, the Orioles currently sit 9.0 games back in the Wild Card race and 13 games below .500.
