The Baltimore Orioles dropped Thursday’s matinee to the Boston Red Sox (75-60) by a score of 3-2. Close, but not close enough. Once again, the Red Sox scored late in the game off of a Baltimore reliever.

Pitching in a tie game in the eighth inning, Rico Garcia (0-1) issued a lead-off walk to Roman Anthony and as the cliche goes, nothing good follows a lead-off walk. After advancing to second on a groundout, Anthony scored the eventual winning run on a Romy Gonzalez two out single. Game, series and sweep. The Orioles finished the homestand with a 1-7 record.

The Orioles managed to get a runner to second base in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not execute at the right times as Interim Manager Tony Mansolino stated post-game. The Orioles went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position for the game and 3 for 30 over the four game series.

At least Anthony did not hit a lead-off homerun on Thursday, he simply hit a lead-off single. It was Trevor Story who hit a solo homerun in the first inning; Anthony was erased on an Alex Bregman groundball double play.

Boston scored their second run via a Rob Refsnyder lead-off homerun in the fourth inning. Starter Cade Povich surrendered both of Boston’s homers among the 7 he allowed over 5.0 innings; he did strikeout 5 of the 21 batters he faced.

Kade Strowd and Shawn Dubin were the bright spots out of the bullpen, pitching two clean innings and a clean ninth, respectively.

Offensively, Alex Jackson homered leading off the third inning and scored again in the fifth inning on a Jeremiah Jackson RBI double after being hit by a Garrett Crochet pitch.

Jackson Holliday, J Jackson, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Emmanuel Rivera each had a pair of hits in the game.

Having finished the season’s series with the Red Sox, the Orioles take a four game losing streak to the West Coast.
