The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox (4-8) 5-3 on Wednesday, winning their third game in a row and completing a sweep of the Southsiders. With the win Baltimore goes 3-3 on the road trip. Ironically the Orioles were coming off being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates and the White Sox had just swept the Toronto Blue Jays.
Kyle Bradish (1-2) recorded his first win of the campaign despite having trouble in the second inning and a meltdown in the fifth. He allowed a triple and two singles to give Chicago a 2 run lead in the second. Two additional singles loaded the bases but a double play allowed Bradish to escape further damage. In the fifth he had a brain fart/meltdown after allowing three walks to load the bases. When Adley Rutschman threw the ball to Bradish after the third walk, Bradish missed the ball because he really wasn’t paying attention. That error was compounded when Bradish’s throw home missed Rutschman and allowed a run to score. His final line was 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits with 3 walks and 7 strike outs over 5.0 innings.
A pair of runs started by Pete Alonso‘s (1 for 5, R) double in the sixth gave the O’s a 4-3 lead and made Bradish the pitcher of record.
Taylor Ward, who went 4 for 5 with 3 doubles, a run scored and 2 RBI had a hand in the Orioles’ scoring in both the third and ninth innings.
Gunnar Henderson and Tyler O’Neill each recorded a hit in the contest.
Once again the bullpen did its job by covering the final 4.0 innings without allowing a run. The only Chicago hit off of the pen came against Grant Wolfram.
Despite allowing 2 walks, Rico Garcia struck out 2 in the ninth to earn his first Baltimore and career save.
The Orioles still need to get the offense in sync and the starting pitching to be more consistent. Maybe home cooking will help.
