The Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-6 on Tuesday night, a game that was slightly delayed by weather at the start and saw chaos erupt in the middle of the seventh inning.
A benches and bullpen emptying incident happened following a Matt Chapman strikeout. There was jawing back and forth between Toronto’s Teoscar Hernandez and Baltimore’s Bryan Baker after the strikeout that Toronto took exception to and the fracas erupted. When calm was restored, warnings were issued and one batter later, Toronto manager John Schneider was ejected.
Now the game. The Orioles scored 5 runs in the third inning by keeping traffic on the bases. An Adley Rutschman (1 for 3, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, 2 BB) double started the scoring and a Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4, 1 RBI) finished it.
Three runs in the eighth inning sealed the win. A bases-loaded walk to Anthony Santander (0 for 4, 2 RBI, 1 BB) scored a run and then a Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 5, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI) single scored two, the second run coming on a challenge of Rutschman being called out in a collision at home.
The play of the night came in the eighth when Rougned Odor (1 for 3, 2 runs scored, 1 BB) swimmingly turned a bloop single into a double.
Jorge Mateo went 1 for 3 with a triple, 2 runs scored and a walk.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch.
The bullpen rose to the occasion in relief of starter Kyle Bradish (3.0 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR allowed). Dillon Tate (4-3) allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts over 1.2 innings pitched to earn the win and Felix Bautista nailed down his 12th save with a 1 R, 2 H, 2 K effort over the final 2.0 innings of the game.
