Thursday’s 3-0 shutout of the Texas Rangers was filled with significant moments for the Baltimore Orioles. The Rookie homerun lead was assumed, a pitcher recorded his first MLB win and another continued his September tear. All in all, it was a good start to the final series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards for 2021.
Ryan Mountcastle’s (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI) fifth inning homerun into the Eutaw Street flag court was his 31st of the season and propelled him into Rookie homerun lead. The player he passed, Adolis Garcia, got to witness the homerun up close and personal as he was in right-field for the Rangers when the ball flew over his head and out of the park.
Starter Zac Lowther held the Rangers to three singles while walking 2, striking out 7 and throwing a wild pitch over 5.0 innings of work. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes, to record his first MLB win.
Not to be outdone, Austin Hays (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI) hit his 22nd homerun of the season in the 8th inning. Haus is swinging a hot bat this month; his slash line for September is currently .300/ .356/ .675 with 4 doubles, a triple, 8 homeruns and 20 RBI.
Ryan McKenna (1 for 4, 1 Run Scored) and Kelvin Gutierrez (1 for 3) both doubled in the game.
Michael Baumann pitched in relief of Lowther and allowed 1 hit and walked 2 over 1.1 innings pitched and turned the game over to Cole Sulser. Baumann was optioned to Norfolk (AAA) after the game.
Sulser pitched 1.2 innings and did not allow the runners he inherited from Baumann to score as he retired the 5 batters he faced, striking out 2 of them.
Tyler Wells (1.0 IP, 1 H) capped of the night with his 4th save of the season.
