The Orioles took a short-lived lead early in Sunday’s game and then regained that lead when it mattered, scoring 4 runs in the 7th inning to beat the New York Yankees by a score of 8-7.

Austin Hays (2 for 5, 2 Runs Scored, 1 RBI) led off the second inning with his 15th homerun of the 2021 campaign, staking the Orioles to a 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last long, however. Starting pitcher Keegan Akin gave up a Gary Sanchez grand slam homerun in the bottom of the inning which put the Yankees in the lead 4-1. Akin finished with a line of 4.0 innings pitched, 4 runs allowed on 3 hits, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts and 1 hit batter.

The Orioles comeback began in the sixth inning with a Cedric Mullins (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB) two-run homerun. The 363 ft. shot to right field was the All-Star’s 25th of the season and made him the third Oriole to hit 25 homeruns and steal 25 bases in a single season since the franchise moved to Baltimore. Don Baylor (1975) and Reggie Jackson (1976) were the two to do it before him. Mullins stole his 26th base of the year in the first inning after he reached base on a lead-off walk.

The comeback was completed in the 7th inning and started with Trey Mancini (0 for 2, 1 Run Scored, 1 BB) “took one for the team” by getting hit by an Andrew Heaney pitch. Two singles followed by a double and another single allowed the Orioles to tie the game at 7 and set the stage for Kelvin Gutierrez’s (2 for 3, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI, HBP) RBI single that scored Jahmai Jones (1 for 2, 1 2B, 1 Run Scored, 2 RBI) with what proved to be the game and series winning run.

Marcos Diplan (1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 H, Sanchez’s 2nd HR of the game, 1 BB), Tanner Scott (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) and Tyler Wells (1.0 IP) made the lead stick with Diplan getting his first win and Wells his first save.

Author’s Note: this is written in dedication to and in memory of Michael “Weams” Williams, my mentor here at the HangOut. I know @weams is looking down with a huge smile for the Orioles on their series win.
